United Kingdom - 11 Postdoc fellowships on Digital Twins, Smart Materials, Data Science, Automation & Robotics, or Sustainability at the University of Cambridge

Future Roads Fellowships (FUTUREROADS) is a Fellowship Programme intended to foster excellence in experienced researchers' training, mobility and career development in advanced research into the digital and sustainable transformation of road networks. 

These fellowships are an excellent opportunity for fresh PhD graduates and researchers with some post-doctoral experience interested in becoming a world leader in Digital Twins, Smart Materials, Data Science , Automation & Robotics, or Sustainability.

Fellows benefit from international, inter-sectoral and interdisciplinary research training as well as transnational and cross-sectoral mobility. The programme allows applicants to have the freedom to develop their own ideas with access to excellent facilities.

The key responsibilities and duties are to (1) devise, implement, and test solution(s) that address the aim of the programme; (2) disseminate outcomes and author reports; (3) develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research; (4) conduct individual and collaborative research; (5) write up research work for presentation and publication. Researcher will be expected to (1) attend secondments with industrial and academic partners;(2) attend the programme’s training sessions; (3) Report to and present research methods and outcomes in management meetings and annual workshops; (4) plan the use of research resources, laboratories, and workshops as appropriate; (5) plan and manage own research activity in collaboration with others.

Who is eligible



Personal eligibility

  • PhD degree or evidence of completing PhD degree requirements and waiting to receive the degree
  • 0-2 years of postdoctoral research experience (after completing the PhD) in any Future Roads scientific areas. Applicants with 3-4 years of postdoctoral research experience will be considered in exceptional cases.
  • Be available to start their fellowship on their cohort start date.
  • Comply with the MSCA Mobility rule, i.e., applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activities (work, studies, etc.) for more than 12 months in the UK in the three years immediately prior to the application deadline. The latter excludes time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention, compulsory national service, and/or short stays such as holidays are not considered.



What is offered



Successful applicants will receive an employment contract and will be entitled to an individual mobility and research budgets..  

Fellows are offered career development support and training events to develop their non-scientific skills.

They are expected to take part in teaching activities at UOC and are encouraged to apply for additional competitive funding.
