HEIDELBERG UNIVERSITY

We have an opening for a PhD project – building next-generation tools for 3D cell cultures using ultrasound. You will join a new research group “Holographic Biofabrication” at the Institute for Molecular Systems Engineering and Advanced Materials (IMSEAM) that has pioneered the use of acoustic holograms to shape ultrasound fields with high fidelity and apply those to microparticle and cell assembly. In this interdisciplinary project you will build novel experimental setups and collaborate with specialized research groups to advance 3D cell cultures and the field of organoid engineering.

Your profile:

  • Completed Master degree in physics, biotechnology, mechanical or electrical engineering or related disciplines

  • You are a scientifically curious person and you enjoy working both independently and collaboratively within a team

  • A willingness to design and build novel experimental setups

  • An interest in the fields of microfluidics, 3D cell culture and organ-on-a-chip

  • Some interest in programming with Python or Matlab

  • A benefit are organizational and communication skills

The PhD student will work under the supervision of Dr. Kai Melde at the IMSEAM. The PhD position (TV-L 13, 65%) is funded in the first instance for 3 years with a starting date based on mutual agreement but preferably before April 2024. The application deadline is February 9, 2024.
