universitat_duisburg-essen_-_ude

University Medicine Essen (UME) Medical Scientist Academy (UMESciA) has identified the strong need to better facilitate and foster interdisciplinary research in university medicine. The complexity of innovative therapies together with rapid technological advances in patient care require intimately interacting Medical and Clinician Scientists. To achieve this goal a supporting structural and organizational basis is also urgently needed. UMESciA will create this institutional basis by supporting “tandem research units” (TRUs) that connect distinguished Medical Scientists with Clinician Scientists from existing UME programs.

UMESciA aims to provide a best practice model for German University Medicine by acting within the internationally recognized UME focus research areas of Oncology and Immunology and by building on a strong translational expertise in investigator-initiated trials (IITs). To this end, the planned Medical Scientist Academy will be integrated into existing structures of clinical excellence in oncology and will synergize with Clinician Scientist programs to generate a group of dedicated researchers that envision a career at the interface of natural sciences and medicine. The planned research program will exploit material and patient data from a large number of innovative IITs with the aim to rapidly improve patient selection and biomarker discovery in costly biological therapies of cancer.

Application is open for 9 Postdoc positions for Medical Scientists from any natural science and life science areas, including data science and bioinformatics. UMESciA scientific activities are accompanied by a structured qualification program and awarded with a certificate at the end of the 2 year program. A selected number of candidates may enter into a second two-year funding phase, based on scientific merit and achievements. Parallel academic qualification towards habilitation is supported by UMESciA.
