About
EURAXESS India in partnership with IndiaBioscience, and in association with the EU Delegation to India, are organising an exclusive webinar on the European Research Council Grant Schemes, on 14 July, 3:00-4:30pm IST.
TheEuropean Research Council (ERC) is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. The ERC supports investigator-driven frontier research across all fields. It awards research grants to scientists and scholars from all over the world, both early-career and senior researchers, carrying out their ambitious research projects in all scientific disciplines in Europe.
This information session will highlight how the ERC supports top researchers from INDIA. Participants will learn about the different ERC Funding Schemes available and how to prepare a competitive application.
The session will also entail information on the opportunities to conduct short-term visits of ERC-funded research teams in Europe under existing bilateral schemes (Implementing Arrangements) between the ERC and Indian entities (i.e. SERB and ICSSR).

About the Speakers
Dr. Vivek Dham, Advisor R&I Section, Delegation of the European Union to India
Dr Vivek DHAM is Advisor for Research & Innovation at the Delegation of the European Union to India since July 2013. In his previous assignment, he worked as a Deputy Head of the Science and Technology, French Embassy in India.
Dr. Dham has an extensive research experience in the field of Impacts of Climate Change on Marine Ecosystems, spanning more than a decade across various continents (France, USA, Japan and Taiwan). He obtained a Doctorate in Marine Biochemistry from the National Institute of Oceanography, Goa and was awarded the prestigious Post-Doctoral fellowship by the French Government at the Station Biologique de Roscoff – CNRS, France.
Prof. Rita Tewari, Professor of Parasite Cell Biology, School of Life Sciences, University of Nottingham, UK
Rita Tewari is an Indian parasitologist who studies the cell and molecular biology of malaria. She currently holds a post as professor at the University of Nottingham.
Tewari held a number of research posts across Europe after completing her PhD in 1989. In chronological order these included a postdoc at the Institut national de la recherche agronomique, France, senior research associate positions at the National Institute for Medical Research/University of Cambridge and Erasmus University Rotterdam, and as a senior scientist at the Sars International Centre for Marine Molecular Biology, Norway. In 1999 she was hired as a research lecturer at Imperial College London, where she first began working on malaria using mice models. She remained here for nine years, notably contributing to research into the role of a calcium-dependent protein kinase in the life cycle of Plasmodium berghei with the lab of Oliver Billker
Tewari became a lecturer at the University of Nottingham in 2008, and was subsequently promoted to associate professor in 2012, and full professor in 2015. Tewari's work has been accomplished in collaboration with many notable malariologists including Anthony Holder, Robert Sinden and Maria Mota.
Dr. Leo Kurian, Associated Principal Investigator, Research Group Leader, CMMC
University of Cologne, Germany
Leo Kurian is an independent group leader from the Center for Molecular Medicine Cologne (CMMC; ZMMK), at the faculty of Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany.
Leo Kurian studied the mechanisms controlling fidelity of translation and ribosomal frameshifting, earning his Ph.D. in 2009 at the Institute for Genetics, University of Cologne. For his postdoctoral work, he moved to the Salk Institute for Biological Studies, San Diego, California, followed by the University of California San Diego (UCSD), where he specialized in the molecular regulation of human embryonic cell fate decisions and RNA biology.
In 2014, he then secured the internationally competitive NRW Stem Cell Network funding to establish his independent laboratory at the CMMC, University of Cologne. In recognition of his scientific contributions, he was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the German Stem Cell Network (2016) and Binder Innovation Award from the German Society for Cell Biology (2021). In 2022, he received the ERC consolidator grant from the European Union.
