Research and PhD Positions: System Optimization using Machine Learning methodologies

The Computer Systems Lab (CSL) of the Electrical and Computer Department of the University of Thessaly, Greece is offering a number of research positions in Computer Engineering / Computer Sciences, funded via the Horizon-Europe MLSysOps project. The research can potentially lead to a doctoral degree. Successful candidates will become part of a vibrant research group, strongly active in research on system software for high-performance, distributed, embedded and reconfigurable computing, and system architecture. Successful candidates will work in a stimulating, creative, and learning environment through a unique interdisciplinary advanced research program.

The Project

MLSysOps will research advanced methods and tools to enable optimal system management and application deployment across the Cloud-Edge continuum using Machine Learning methodologies and techniques. MLSysOps will push the technological boundary of autonomic systems research by relegating management and control of heterogeneous resources across the continuum to a hierarchy of continual ML algorithms.
The MLSysOps consortium consists of 12 partners, 4 universities, 2 research centers, and 6 industrial and SME partners from 9 different European countries.

Starting date: Before the end of 2023

Research Description

Research and develop the architecture of the MLSysOps framework and the ML-driven management of computing resources in the cloud and edge data centers. Co-operate with ML experts in defining the properties and interfaces of ML algorithms for continual learning both at the node and the system level to optimize several system metrics such as energy dissipation, throughput, green energy utilization, trust/security, etc.

Prerequisites/Requirements
  • A MSc (or equivalent) in computer engineering/science with excellent grades from a leading university. Outstanding candidates with a BSc/Diploma (or equivalent) will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience in system software (operating systems, runtime mechanisms, distributed and cloud computing), computer architecture, and embedded systems.
  • Highly motivated to push the state of the art, perform challenging development work and publish in top international conferences and journals. Ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines.
  • Team player with good communication skills, willing to work in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Excellent English language skills (writing, presenting, teaching).
  • Relocation to Volos, Greece for the duration of the doctorate.

Please submit by email all of the following to be formally considered for the position
