The European Research Council (ERC) is the premier European funding organisation for excellent frontier research. The ERC supports investigator-driven frontier research across all fields. It awards research grants to scientists and scholars from all over the world, both early-career and senior researchers, carrying out their ambitious research projects in all scientific disciplines in Europe.

Who should attend?

This session is directed at post-doctoral researchers and established researchers (PhD + 2 to 15 years experience) of all disciplines and all nationalities.

Participants will learn about the ERC Grants and the eligibility criteria.

Participants will be able to engage with current ERC grantees.

Participants will receive basic information on how to get started with their application from a European ERC expert (NCP Dr Huber).

When will this webinar take place?

This 90-minute webinar will take place on 24 March at 4.00pm Singapore time (9am CET). Please ensure you confirm the timing in the time zone where you are based!

Participants are encouraged to submit their questions prior to the event via email at asean@euraxess.net. Please use the subject heading 'Question for ERC webinar on 24 March'

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

 

H.E. Barbara Plinkert, Ambassador of the EU to Singapore

H.E. Barbara Plinkert began her term as the EU Ambassador to Singapore in 2017. Prior to her assignment in Singapore, Ambassador Plinkert was Head of Division responsible for Headquarters Security and EEAS Security Policy at the European External Action Service in Brussels. Before that, she served in various positions in different parts of the world. Between 1998 and 2003 she worked for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, which took her to Afghanistan.

Prof Chen Tsuhan, Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor, National University of Singapore

Professor Chen Tsuhan was appointed Deputy President (Research and Technology) and Distinguished Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS) on 1 June 2018. Prof Chen is a renowned expert in pattern recognition, computer vision, and machine learning. He is also the Chief Scientist of AI Singapore, a national programme in artificial intelligence hosted at NUS.

Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon, President of European Research Council

Professor Jean-Pierre Bourguignon is President ad interim of the European Research Council (ERC) (from 27 July 2020 until the next ERC President is selected and takes up duties). Previously, he was the ERC President from January 2014 until December 2019. Prior to that, he was the Director of the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques(IHÉS) from 1994 till 2013. This international research institute located near Paris, France, was built as the European counterpart of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. He was also the first ERC Panel Chair in Mathematics, for Starting Grants.A mathematician by training, he spent his whole career as a fellow of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS). He held a Professor position at École polytechnique from 1986 to 2012. From 1990 to 1992, he was President of the Société Mathématique de France and President of the European Mathematical Society from 1995 to 1998. He is a former member of the Board of the EuroScience organisation (2002-2006) and served on EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) committees since 2004.

Prof Kevin Heng, Astrophysicist and Professor in Bern, Switzerland

Kevin Heng is a tenured professor of astronomy and planetary science at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and the director of its Center for Space and Habitability (CSH). He is also Honorary Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Warwick. Kevin Heng is a core science team member of the CHEOPS space mission of ESA and a project leader of the PlanetS National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR). He is the recipient of a 2017 ERC Consolidator Grant and the 2018 Chambliss Award. He is a regular writer / columnist for the American Scientist magazine. Assistant Professor Jia Min Chin, Department of Physical Chemistry, University of Vienna, Austria

Jia Min Chin started a tenure track professorship in physical chemistry at the University of Vienna in 2019. The assistant professor of the Faculty of Chemistry obtained her PhD at MIT in the USA under Nobel Prize winner Richard R. Schrock. Afterwards she worked at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore, establishing a laboratory for advanced porous materials. The winner of the "L'Oréal Singapore for Women in Science National Fellowship" then moved to the University of Hull in the UK in 2014, where she led a research cluster until her move to Vienna.

Dr Jewellord Nem Singh, Senior Lecturer, International Institute of Social Studies, Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), The Netherlands

Jojo T. Nem Singh is a Senior Lecturer in International Development at the International Institute of Social Studies, part of Erasmus University Rotterdam. He is the Principal Investigator of the ERC Starting Grant "Green Industrial Policy in the Age of Rare Metals: A Trans-regional Comparison of Growth Strategies in Rare Earths Mining" (GRIP-ARM) (2021-2026). He is the editor of several special issues on natural resource politics, industrial policy and the return of the developmental state, and the role of China in the global South.

Dr Ylva Huber, Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG), Austria

Ylva Huber,a geneticist by training, joined the Austrian Research Promotion Agency in 2004. She has been National Contact Point (NCP) for the European Research Council (ERC) since 2011 and coordinates FFG's contribution to the EURAXESS initiative. Previous functions include the NCP for Health and Knowledge Based Bio-­Economy well as consultancy on the Innovative Medicines Initiative. She has been involved in several EU projects aimed at fostering cooperation between the private and the academic sector. Since 2004 she also acts as external lecturer at the University of Vienna.
