Offer Description
The Centre for Research and Studies in Sociology (CIES-Iscte) of the University Institute of Lisbon announces a call for applications for the award of one (1) Research Grant for a Doctoral Student, within the scope of the project Cmp_Pop Roma – Know, Map, Include: Roma/Gypsy Population in Portugal, funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (2023.10572.CIG), in collaboration with the Economic and Social Council and the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum, I.P.
Work Plan
The work plan will consist of providing support to the research activities of the Cmi_Pop Roma project, namely: monitoring the administration of questionnaire-based surveys in the field and supervising responses to the online survey, as well as their statistical processing; supporting the preparation of project outputs, particularly statistical reports and scientific articles; providing support for and administrative management of the project; transcription and analysis of interviews; support in the organization and facilitation of three participatory workshops; support for and participation in team meetings and in the organization of events to promote and disseminate the project, ensuring that all work is carried out in a timely manner and in accordance with the parameters set out in the project plan.

Eligibility requirements: Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Sociology or Social Psychology and be enrolled in a PhD programme in Sociology or Social Psychology (in accordance with Article 6 of the Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. – Regulation No. 950/2019).
Academic degrees obtained abroad must be officially recognized by a Portuguese institution, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August and Ordinance No. 33/2019 of 25 January. Presentation of the certificate is mandatory for signing the contract.

Preferred criteria:
a) Proven experience in the use of SPSS software, as well as in data analysis and the writing of statistical reports.
b) Experience in supervising and administering questionnaire-based surveys in the field.
c) Proven experience in the use of MAXQDA software.
d) Experience in the administrative management of research projects.
e) Interest in undertaking a PhD and/or research work in the field of Roma/Gypsy studies.
f) Proficiency in Portuguese and English.
Additional Information
Monthly Maintenance Allowance
The amount corresponds to €1,309.64, in accordance with the FCT Regulations for Research Grants currently in force (Regulation No. 950/2019). This amount is supplemented, where applicable, by voluntary social security contributions should the candidate choose to receive them, as well as personal accident insurance. The grant will be paid monthly by bank transfer.
Duration of the Grant
The grant will have a duration of five (5) months, with an expected start date of 2 March. The grant contract may be renewed within the duration of the research project and in accordance with the provisions of paragraph 4 of Article 6 of the Regulations for Research Grants of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P., currently in force.
Selection Methods
The selection process will be carried out on the basis of a curriculum vitae assessment. Should several candidates demonstrate that they possess the profile required to carry out the work plan, the selection panel reserves the right to invite the three highest-scoring candidates to an interview, which will carry a weight of 35% in the final score.
If the panel considers that interviews are unnecessary, the curriculum assessment will account for 100% of the final evaluation. The curriculum assessment criteria are based on:
a) academic background (40%);
b) experience demonstrated in the items listed under the preferred criteria (60%).
The curriculum assessment of candidates will be conducted in accordance with the criteria indicated above and will be expressed on an integer scale from 0 to 20.
The panel reserves the right to:
a) invite the next highest-ranked candidate, following the order established in the final ranking list, whenever the selected candidate does not meet the requirements for the formalization of the contract or in the event of unavailability;
b) not award the grant if none of the candidates matches the desired profile.
Composition of the Selection Panel
Candidates will be selected by a panel composed of Dr. Inês Barbosa (University of Porto), who will act as Chair, and members Dr. Maria Manuela Mendes (CIES-Iscte) and Dr. Pedro Candeias (CIES-Iscte).

The call is open from 23 January to 5 February.

- Detailed Curriculum Vitae;
- Copy of the certificate(s) of academic qualifications for the Bachelor’s/Master’s/Doctoral degree, with a breakdown of completed course units and corresponding grades;
- Proof of enrolment in a study cycle leading to the award of a PhD degree or, alternatively, a sworn statement declaring that the candidate will be able to present this document at the time of contract signing;
- Other supporting documents considered relevant, including letter(s) of recommendation and certificates of participation in qualitative or quantitative analysis training/courses (SPSS, MAXQDA), as well as in research and/or intervention projects, internships; a copy of the master’s thesis, completed works or publications, etc.;
- Proof of proficiency in the Portuguese language, if Portuguese is not the candidate’s first language / Proof of proficiency in the English language, if English is not the candidate’s first language. Alternatively, a sworn statement by the candidate;
- Motivation letter.
