Eligibility of candidates
Candidates must meet the eligibility requirements set out in Article 9 of the FCT I.P. Research Grant Regulations (Regulation No. 950/2019, published in the Official Gazette, 2nd series, No. 241 on December 16).
Project Summary
Visibility and internationalization of Finisterra as a leading geography journal. Finisterra – Revista Portuguesa de Geografia has a consolidated editorial history, from its founding by Orlando Ribeiro in 1966 to the present day. With the aim of establishing and maintaining itself as a leading journal in the field of geography and related scientific areas, Finisterra has been updating its submission and publication processes, with the adoption of a fully digital model beginning in 2026. The editorial choices made aim to enhance the journal's appeal to authors, reviewers, and readers, as well as to respond to the current demands of scientific publishing. In this context, the implementation of fast and efficient submission and publication processes, combined with the strengthening of dissemination mechanisms, internationalization, and presence on leading indexing platforms, plays a central role in attracting high-quality articles and increasing the journal's competitiveness in the international scientific landscape.
Work plan
The work plan for the research fellow to be hired is as follows:
1. Support the management of submitted manuscripts, ensuring coordination between authors, reviewers, and editors, as well as monitoring and meeting deadlines;
2. Format and support the publication of documents edited at Finisterra;
3. Collaboration in the organization of events and activities promoted by Finisterra, namely training activities, the Annual Lecture (or other initiatives), including logistical and organizational support tasks;
4. Collaboration in tasks related to the dissemination of Finisterra, its publications, and initiatives on the journal's website, social media, and other dissemination and indexing portals.

Additional Information
Duration of the scholarship
The research scholarship will have an expected duration of 12 (twelve) months and maybe renewed. The scholarship is expected to start in January 2026, and the duties will be performed on an exclusive basis.
Monthly maintenance allowance amount
The scholarship amount is €1,040.98, according to the table of values for scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/Tabela_valores_SMM_2025.p…).
Selection methods
The selection method will be based on the evaluation of the candidates' CVs.
Evaluation parameters: The CV evaluation includes the following parameters:
– Curriculum Vitae (40%);
– Degree classification (40%);
– Level of fluency and accuracy in Portuguese and English (10%);
– Letter of motivation submitted by the candidate for the position, demonstrating that they meet all admission requirements (10%).
The jury may, if deemed necessary, invite the top three candidates for an interview. In this case, the interview will account for 30% of the final score, to be added to the score obtained in the first selection phase, which will account for 70%.
The jury may decide not to award any scholarships if the candidates do not meet the desired profile.
Composition of the Selection Panel
The selection panel for this scholarship is composed of the following members:

1st Permanent Member: Dr. Ana Louro, Assistant Professor at IGOT-ULisboa;
2nd Permanent Member: Dr. Nuno Marques da Costa, Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa;
1st Alternate Member: Dr. Daniela Ferreira, Junior Researcher at IGOT-ULisboa.
2nd Alternate Member: Dr. Marcelo Fragoso, Associate Professor at IGOT-ULisboa.
Form of publication/notification of results
The final results of the evaluation will be communicated to candidates via notification sent to the email address provided for this purpose.
If the result is unfavorable to the granting of the requested scholarship, candidates have a period of 10 working days to respond, if they so wish, at a prior hearing with the interested parties, under the terms of Articles 121 and 122 of the Administrative Procedure Code (Decree-Law No. 4/2015 of January 7 and its amendments).
The selected candidate must express their intention to accept the scholarship in writing. In case of non-acceptance, the scholarship will be awarded to the next candidate in order of final ranking.
Application deadline and submission of applications
The competition is open from January 8 to January 21, 2026.

a) Letter of motivation;
b) Curriculum Vitae;
c) Qualification certificate. Regarding the qualification certificate, if the degree was obtained from a foreign institution, it must be recognized by a Portuguese institution in accordance with Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of August 16, and Ordinance No. 33/2019, of January 25, in the wording in force on the date of application;
d) In the case of foreign citizens, a document proving residence in Portugal, namely a residence permit or other legally equivalent document;
e) Proof of enrollment in a master's degree or integrated master's degree;
f) Other supporting documents considered relevant;
g) Declaration of prior consent for communication by electronic means.
The reference to the Finisterra_2025 competition must be indicated in the subject line of the application email.

The work will be carried out at the Center for Geographical Studies of the Institute of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Lisbon (IGOT-ULisboa), under the scientific guidance of Dr. Eduardo Brito-Henriques, Associate Professor with Aggregation at IGOT-ULisboa.
