Offer Description

One fully funded four-year PhD studentship in Civil Engineering (Coastal Engineering) is available in the UCD School of Civil Engineering starting from May 2024. This project is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency Ireland.

As part of this project, the candidate will work closely with team members (including PhDs) from the School of Biology and Environmental Science (UCD) and the School of Natural Sciences (University of Galway), to develop a framework for the assessment of coastal protection services provided by nature-based measures in Irish coastal waters. The PhD position will involve laboratory testing (using a two-dimensional wave channel at UCD) and numerical simulations (using e.g., Delft3D/MIKE21, but not limited to) of the hydrodynamics of nature-based measures to investigate the coastal resilience of such approaches in a changing climate.

The candidate will have the opportunity to collaborate with a team of experts in hydraulic engineering, marine biology, marine ecology, and relevant industrial stakeholders.

Supervisor: Dr Md Salauddin

Collaborators: Assoc Prof John O’Sullivan & Dr Paul Brooks (UCD), Dr Pedro Beca-Carretero (University of Galway)

Requirements/Qualifications: Applicants should have a first or upper-second-class honours Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil, Water Resources or Coastal Engineering, or in a relevant field. The candidate should be highly motivated and capable of working both independently and within a team. Strong numerical, analytical, and programming skills are desirable, as is an ability to communicate scientific research findings.

Previous experience of working with hydrodynamic modelling is an advantage.

Excellent written, oral communication skills and a high level of competence in the English language are essential (See UCD’s policy on minimum English language requirements here).

Project Duration: 48 Months

Funding and Fees: The successful candidate will receive a stipend of €19,000 per annum, full

funding for UCD tuition fees for EU/non-EU applicants. The position is funded for four years - subject to satisfactory progress. Additional research and travel expenses will also be available.

Application procedure: Applicants should submit their CV, personal statement, and recommendation letters from two referees as a single pdf document to md.salauddin@ucd.ie
