Description

IMDEA Materials Institute is looking for postdoctoral researchers willing to apply for Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships (PF) in call 2023 (deadline 13/09/2023). IMDEA Materials Institute has a long track record of hosting MSCA fellows and has obtained excellent success rates in recent calls of MSCA PF (approximately twice the average for the engineering panel in which we submit most proposals).

Interested candidates (if successful) will work under the supervision of Dr. Federico Sket, Senior Researcher and head of In-situ processing and mechanical characterization of materials group at IMDEA Materials. The candidate will work in the development of correlative 3D X-ray imaging using laboratory and synchrotron radiation sources and in-situ X-ray (imaging and diffraction) characterization during the additive manufacturing process to bridge scales from hundreds of mm down to the nm. The developments will be applied to state-of-the-art synchrotron beamlines at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) and will allow to develop the bridges across several length scales, increase time resolution (acquisition times) and extend the application domain of the technique. The developments will be applied to specific science cases of additive manufacturing of metallic materials. The project involves intensive activities on image processing, the application of artificial intelligence tools for image treatment and material’s manufacturing and characterization. These activities involve a common research line between IMDEA Materials and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in advanced X-ray characterization of materials. Therefore a secondment (research stay) at DLR will be part of the project. While seconded at DLR, the candidate will be supervised by Prof. Guillermo Requena (Deputy director of the Institute of Materials Research and head of the Metallic and Hybrid Materials Department at the DLR). IMDEA Materials and DLR have state-of-the-art facilities for additive manufacturing of materials and multi-scale correlative characterization (3D-FIB-SEM-EBSD, 3D-TEM, XCT, DCT, in-situ devices, etc.) and long-term collaboration with the ESRF for the development of correlative imaging and in-situ 3D printing. Therefore, the candidate must be willing to carry out stays at both DLR and ESRF.

HOW TO SUBMIT YOUR EXPRESSION OF INTEREST:

Interested candidates, please email your resume and a brief outline of the proposed research project (2 pages maximum) to Dr. Federico Sket (federico.sket@imdea.org) before July 15th 2023.

DESCRIPTION OF THE MSCA POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS:

The purpose of the MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA PF) is to enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD, wishing to acquire new skills through advanced training and international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility. This is achieved by implementing a research project at a host institution. The fellowship typically covers the researcher's two-year salary, research costs and overheads for the host institution.

The mobility rule of MSCA PF requires that the researcher (candidate) has not resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organization (Spain, in the case of IMDEA Materials Institute) for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the call deadline (expected to be September 13th 2023 for call 2023). Moreover, only candidates with research experience up to 8 years postdoc from the date the PhD degree was granted are eligible (with possible exceptions).
