Description
The Exercise Physiology, Nutrition, and Health Research Group (ExPhy CTS-1120) at the University of Cadiz conducts research on type 2 diabetes (T2D) and the beneficial effects of physical exercise and dietary programs. Two key studies funded by the Spanish Ministry include:
1) The EDUGUTION study (Ref: PID2019-110063RA-I00) (Clinical Trial n. NCT05261373), and
2) The APETEX study (Ref: PID2020-120034RA-I00) (Clinical Trial n. NCT05259449).
These projects aimed to investigate the impact of various aerobic exercise programs, alone or in combination with diet, on the insulin signaling pathway and appetite regulation, considering the potential influence of gut microbiota and miRNAs. A three-month intervention involving 120 participants with T2D was implemented, with two intervention arms: aerobic exercise (divided into high-intensity interval training [HIIT], moderate-intensity continuous training [MICT], or controls [INACT]), and diet (participants receiving a specific diet [DIET] or controls [CG]). Participants were randomized into six groups: HIIT+DIET, MICT+DIET, INACT+DIET, HIIT+CG, MICT+CG, INACT+CG. The postdoctoral candidate could introduce new molecular analysis into future projects focusing on obesity and diabetes, the main research areas of the ExPhy group.
They can utilize our expertise in muscle biopsies, blood treatment, with a special emphasis on exosomes and miRNA measurements. The ExPhy group comprises two labs: i) Exercise Physiology Lab equipped with gas analyzers, ergometers, cycles, NIRS, EMG, EEG, ECG, etc.; and ii) Molecular Lab equipped for genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic measurements (including hormones). Additionally, the ExPhy group has access to the hospital for research studies.
