About
Within the framework of the Junior Professor Chair “Olfactions”, the University of Grenoble Alpes is offering a 3-year doctoral funding (€2,200 per gross month) for a thesis in history or art history supervised by Érika Wicky and Anne Dalmasso at the Rhône-Alpes Historical Research Laboratory (LARHRA). Focusing on the history of perfumery in Italy in the 19th century, the doctoral thesis will first outline the main stages in the development of perfumery in the different regions of Italy, or a selection of them depending on the corpus identified. The aim will be to highlight the interaction between craft and industry, or the way in which Italian perfumery distinguished itself through its production of raw materials, its compositions, its commercial strategies and/or its representations.
The thesis must be written in French, but the candidate is expected to be fluent in Italian and to have a Master’s degree in history or art history related to the subject (history of techniques, senses, representations, etc.). It is also possible for the thesis to be co-tutored by an Italian institution.
The doctoral student will be encouraged to participate in the scientific activities of the LARHRA (organisation of scientific events, participation in seminars, etc.) and to disseminate his/her research to a wide audience.
Applications must include a curriculum vitae and a 3-page dissertation project (excluding bibliography) indicating the perspective and approach chosen as well as an overview of the sources studied. Applications must be sent to the following address by 31 May 2024: erika.wicky@univ-grenoble-alpes.fr
Online auditions will take place during the week of 10 June. The start of the dissertation is scheduled for 1 September 2024.
