Offer Description
This doctoral dissertation is part of the STASTA project, which aims to study comparatively and diachronically the relationship between the standardisation of market tools (weights, measures, coinage), and interrelated developments in literary culture, politics, and religious ideology in the Greco-Roman world from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE. More specifically, the doctoral dissertation will study the notion of “just measure” in Jewish and Christian literature during the Hellenistic and Roman periods, using philological and linguistic methodologies. This study will also shed new light on the ways Jews and Christians interacted with the socio-economical context in these periods. Possible areas of investigation include the reception and echoes of the relevant biblical texts (e.g. Lev 19:36; Deut 25:13-16: Prov 11:1) in Second Temple literature; the Greek section of the Aramaic Levi Document, which is inspired by Babylonian metrological lists; and the translation of the Hebrew terms for weights and measures in the Septuagint; the figurative use of the notion of measure in the New Testament (e.g. Mt 7:2; Jn 3:34; Rm 12:3). The dissertation may be written in either English or in French.
