Under the terms of Order No. 181/2023, of 04 January, by delegation of powers, the Director of the
Faculty of Science and Technology, University NOVA of Lisbon, Prof. Dr. José Júlio Alves Alferes, makes
known that it is open for the period of 30 days from the immediate day of publication of this notice in the
Diário da República, international call, with the internal reference "DQ-EXBRINER-AI", for the
recruitment of a Research Assistant, under a uncertain contract term, within the project HORIZONMSCA-
2021-DN-01 - EXBRINER No.: 101072449, funded by the Horizon Europe program, in
accordance with Regulation No. 393/2018, published in the Diário da República No. 123, 2nd series of
June 28, 2018.
In compliance with paragraph h) of article 9 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, NOVA

I - Place of Work
The Assistant Researcher’s working place shall be at the premises of the Department of Chemistry of
Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the framework of Associate
Laboratory for Green Chemistry, located at Campus de Caparica, Portugal (supervisors: Dr. Cláudia
Galinha, Dr. Sylwin Pawlowski and Prof. João Crespo), and at 1) Vysoka Skola Chemicko-
Technologicka V Praze, Czech Republic (Department Of Inorganic Technology, under supervision of
Prof. Karel Bouzek); 2) Università Della Calabria, Italy (Department Of Environmental Engineering,
under supervision of Prof. Efrem Curcio); 3) PCCELL GMBH, Germany (under supervision of Dr. Patrick
Altmeier), during 2 months each. He/She shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her
attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.
II - Activities and Functions:
The Assistant Researcher (PhD student) shall be responsible for the tasks allocated to FCT NOVA) in
the project regarding the study of reverse electrodialysis to harvest the salinity gradient power from
desalination brine. Namely, the development of profiled membranes using 3D printing technology,
optimization of stack channels’ geometry based on CFD studies and development and validation of
online monitoring of fouling of RED membranes:
• Evaluation of internal and the ohmic resistance of the RED stack by chronopotentiometry,
measurement of open circuit voltage/power density (gross-net) as a function of current density for
feed solutions pairs at different salinity, feed flowrate, temperature;
• Development of methods to prepare profiled membranes by 3D printing, either directly, either by
preparation of supports/molds with a low cost;
• Optimization of fluid distribution in RED stacks based on CFD simulations;
• Development of monitoring methods and molecular probes for online tracking of fouling onset and
development.

The Assistant Researcher shall fully devote the whole of his/her professional activity to FCT NOVA, on
an exclusive basis.
III – Remuneratory position:
According to the Regulation of early stage researchers (ESR) of Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
(MSCA) and the UNL Regulation is applied the n.º 3 of article 15 under n.º 393/2018 published in Diário
da República no 123, 2nd Series, 28th of June 2018, the monthly salary in Portugal after the correction
factor applied are: Living allowance – €1819.38/month, additional mobility allowance of €490.60/month,
and family allowance of €500/month depending on family situation at the time of recruitment (this
correspond gross monthly rate before all compulsory deductions applied to Portugal).
IV - Type and duration of the contract:
1. The opening of the present tender procedure is for the selection of a Research Assistant position for
the exercise of scientific research activities under an employment contract for an unspecified
resolutive term, where the basis for hiring is the execution of a determined, precisely defined and
non-lasting service, and the hiring must be financed whatever the source.
2. An employment contract for an uncertain term shall have the duration of the project task, 36 months
or for as long as the funding lasts, without, however, exceeding the maximum limit of 72 months.
V - Admission Requirements for candidates
• The candidates eligible need to follow the requirements within the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
(MSCA), namely do not reside and live for more than 12 months in the last 3 years prior to the
recruitment date plus to have less than 4 years at full time equivalent in researcher activities.
• The applicant should be in their early research careers and not yet have been awarded a doctorate.
Ineligible candidates will be not considered for the selection procedure.
• The candidates must have a Master’s degree in a field such as Chemical Engineering or related field
(such as Materials Engineering, Physical Engineering, Environmental Engineering).
• The candidates will be enrolled in the Doctoral Programme in Chemical and Biological Engineering
at FCT NOVA.
• The candidates must hold a 2nd Level Master’s Degree MSc (120 ECTS + 180 ECTS in a Bachelor’s
Degree BSc) or a Single-Cycle Degree combining BSc/MSc programs (minimum 300 ECTS) or an
equivalent university degree (Second Cycle qualification).
VI - Instruction of candidature
1. The application should be completed by filling in the respective application form, which is available
at https://www.fct.unl.en/faculdade/concursos/investigadores.
2. The application must be accompanied by the documentation in English language.
3. The application should be submitted by e-mail, containing the following documents:
a) Curriculum Vitae and Motivation Letter;
b) Certificates of academic degrees and certificates of intermediate degrees, including the academic
path, clearly stating the name of the University issuing the degree, the date of graduation, the final
score; copies of official transcripts (mark sheets) of academic courses attended to obtain each
degree (BSc, MSc or equivalent) and corresponding Grade Point Average; any other document
considered useful (e.g. University Diploma Supplement) to assess the eligibility of the University
Degree. All documents in original language and translated in English (or in the national language
of the recruiting Higher Education Institution)
c) Maximum of two reference letters
d) Concise recognition on the state-of-the-art (3000 to 4000 characters), on the topic of the work plan
to be developed
e) Copy of the first two and last two pages of the Passport or – for EU citizens - of the Identity Card
VII - Submission of application
1. The application documents should be submitted by the 30th working day after the day following the
publication of this Notice in the Diário da República.
2. Candidates shall submit their application documents, in a single file, in PDF format, by e-mail to

VIII - Evaluation parameters
The selection of the successful candidate will be carried out through the evaluation of the scientific and
curricular achievements as established by n.º1 of article 37º of Decree-Law n.º 124/99 of april 20th, that
approves the statute of Investigation career and by UNL Regulation nº 393/2018 published in Diário da
República n.º 123, 2nd Series, at 28th of June, and the selection criteria and their respective weighting
shall be as follows:
a) Curricular Evaluation (Adequacy of the CV to the position) (50%)
b) Remote interview (50%)
Each phase will be scored between 0 and 100, and only candidates with a score greater than 75 (out of
100) in the curriculum evaluation (first phase) will be called for the interview phase.
IX - Reasons for exclusion
Candidates will not be admitted to the competition if they fail to comply with point V, and candidates will
be excluded without further consideration if they fail to submit their application using the form, or if they
do not submit all the documents referred to in point VI, or if they submit illegible, incorrectly completed,
or invalid documents.
In case of doubt, and for the purposes of admission to the competition procedure, it will also be entitled
to require any candidate to produce supporting documents for their statements.
X - Evaluation of the Applications
Applications shall be subject to evaluation by a jury that shall follow the procedure established in n.º1 of
article 37º of Estatuto da Carreira de Investigação Cientifica, Decree-Law n.º 124/99 and by UNL
Regulation .º 393/2018 published in Diário da República n.º 123 ,2nd Series, June 28th of 2018.
XI - Notifications and Hearing of Interested Parties
1. A prior hearing shall be held, under the terms of the Administrative Procedure Code, for candidates
who have been rejected and for candidates who have been placed on the ranking list of candidates
who cannot be filled for the position open to competition. All the candidates shall be notified of the
homologation of the jury's final deliberation.
2. Notifications shall be made by e-mail.
3. The tender dossier may be consulted by the candidates, in the Human Resources Division of FCT
NOVA, under the terms indicated in the above mentioned notification.
XII - Composition of the Jury
In accordance with article 12 of regulation no. 393/2018, of 28 June, the selection committee is
composed of three members to be appointed by the Director of the organic unit from among researchers,
professors or doctors in the scientific area of the recruitment procedure.
