The mentor of the doctoral student is dr. Petar Popčević (ppopcevic@ifs.hr).

The research topic is in the field of experimental condensed matter physics. The candidate will study the influence of external parameters (hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure, magnetic fields) and structural (dis)order on the ground states of magnetically intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides (TMD) and other strongly correlated layered materials.

Research methods include synthesis, characterization, and investigation of physical properties by various laboratory techniques (transport and magnetic properties, physical properties under hydrostatic and uniaxial pressure and various spectroscopic techniques) as well as at large user facilities across Europe (synchrotrons, neutron scattering, high fields).

The research is conducted in the “Group for the research of complex and highly correlated functional materials” at the Institute of Physics in productive and stimulating domestic and international collaboration with Faculty of Science of University of Zagreb, TU Wien, AGH Krakow, EPFL Lausanne and other.

Candidates are expected to have a good knowledge of the condensed matter physics, high motivation to work in the laboratory on the described topics and an excellent knowledge of English. Priority will be given to candidates who have shown excellence in studying and research work (awards, scholarships, published papers, conference presentations, etc.). Practical experience with outlined experimental techniques is expected while experience with the research topic ais an advantage. Experience with implementation of new experimental techniques would present strong advantage.

A valid application is considered to be an application that contains all the information and attachments specified in the tender. Late and irregular applications will not be considered, nor will applicants be invited to supplement the application. Persons who submit untimely and irregular applications or do not meet the formal requirements of the competition are not considered candidates for the competition.
