Offer Description
The DECADES (Design of Catalytic Processes with Deep-Eutectic-Solvents) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions - Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) is an interdisciplinary research training network of six universities and ten companies from six European countries. DECADES aims to develop the PhDs' scientific expertise to produce excellent research and interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists from different fields, including biology, chemistry, and engineering. It is funded under the "Excellent Science" cluster of the EU's Horizon Europe program.
Roles and Responsibilities
The central part of your doctoral research will be carried out at the Graz University of Technology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Robert Kourist in the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology, Graz University of Technology. An academic secondment placement (4 months) will take place at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain, with Prof. Dr. Andrés R. Alcántara). Additionally, a placement at the company Henkel (Germany, 3 months) is planned. The PhD-project is funded for 36 months and will start by October 2023.
Your Ph.D. degree will be awarded based on the successful completion of the research work from Graz University of Technology, Austria. You will also be required to participate in the trainings and workshops organized by the DECADES DN. As a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions fellow, you are also expected to contribute disseminating your project's results through public engagement and other scientific platforms.

(i) Generation and analysis of microbial hosts with improved solvent tolerance,
(ii) Characterization of reaction products as bio-based monomers,
(iii) Application of the reaction products for the production of bio-based adhesives.

- The applicant should have completed at least four or five years of education with a Master's degree or Diploma (before the start of recruitment around September 2023) from a recognized university in biochemistry, chemistry, biotechnology, molecular sciences or related disciplines and should be eligible as a graduate student at Graz University of Technology, Austria.
- The applicant should show interest in conducting a research project independently and should enjoy the work in an international and interdisciplinary environment.
- At the time of recruitment, the applicant must not have resided (or carried out his/her main activity, e.g. work, studies, etc.) in Austria for more than 12 months in the last three years immediately before the reference recruitment date.
- The applicant should have an excellent command of the English language at a proficient level (spoken and written) and the willingness to learn the local language of the recruiting country.

Additional Information
The salary consists of a monthly Living Allowance; in addition, researchers recruited within a MSCA-DN programme are entitled to receive a monthly Mobility Allowance and, if applicable, a Family Allowance depending on the marital status. The family status of a researcher will be determined at the date of her/his (first) recruitment in the action but can be changed during the action lifetime. The net salary will be determined after subtracting all compulsory (employer and employee) deductions and withholdings from the gross amounts in line with national legislation.
Candidates must be in the first four years of his/her research career, not have a doctoral degree, and not have resided in Austria for more than 12 months in the three years immediately before the recruitment date.
