Offer Description
The ICEBIO Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network is recruiting 11 PhD students!
The ICEBIO consortium comprises 6 leading research teams across Europe (Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Austria and Switzerland) and two industrial stakeholders (Germany and France).
ICEBIO's mission is to train 11 predoctoral researchers in glacier microbiology and biogeochemistry. Glaciers and ice sheets were long believed to be sterile environments, but just like other large ecosystems (e.g., tropical forests, tundra), they are now widely recognized as one of the Earth’s biomes, teeming with life. Active algae, fungi, bacteria and viruses dominate the glacial environment and they have the ability to change the physical and chemical characteristics of the ice and snow, with global effects. Despite their global influence, many of the microbiological processes within the cryosphere remain poorly quantified. A deeper understanding of such processes are relevant to researchers interested in the possibility of life on icy extraterrestrial bodies, the survival and proliferation of life forms on our early Earth, and the positive and negative feedbacks that the cryosphere may have on global warming. The microbial communities living in association with icy environments may also harbor unique metabolic pathways, providing novel opportunities in biotechnology.
The 11 open doctoral positions include:
DC1: The ecological role of bioaerosols on glacial habitats (University of Innsbruck, Austria). Application deadline January 30, 2023
DC2: Microbial inputs to glaciers via snow deposition and their microbial selection processes at glacier surfaces (Ecole Centrale de Lyon, France). Application deadline February 28, 2023.
DC3: Fluxes and flows of microbial biomass and carbon through surface glacial habitats (Aarhus University, Denmark). Applications deadline January 10, 2023
DC4: Metatranscriptomics distribution within the glacier bio (Aarhus University, Denmark). Application deadline April 5, 2023
DC5: Metabolic pathways in surface and subglacial habitats (German Research Center for Geosciences, Germany). Application deadline January 6, 2023
DC6: Glacial flour, grinding and nutrient release (Aarhus University, Denmark): Application deadline January 10, 2023
DC7: Development of in situ ammonia and phosphate sensors for biogeochemical analyses of glacial meltwaters (German Research Center for Geosciences). Application deadline January 31, 2023
DC8: Glacial Flour Power – understanding the controls, fate and impacts of sedimentbound nutrients exported from glaciers (The Arctic University of Norway). Application deadline 15 February 2023.
DC9: Molecular and community response to glacial flour and impact on N-cycling (Hydreka, France). Application deadline 1 March 2023.
DC10: Pathogens in glacial environments of the European Alps (Dr. Brill + partner GmbH, Germany). Application deadline 31 December 2022.
DC11: Unravelling impacts of glacier dynamics on the microbial life in glacier-fed streams of the Pamir (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, Switzerland). Application now closed.

Additional Information
The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network Program offers a highly competitive and attractive salary and working conditions. Each fellowship includes the following:
- ~3400 €/month gross living allowance. This amount varies depending on the country of residence and depends on country-specific correction coefficients. This amount is subject to local taxes, social security deductions, etc.
- The host organisation will appoint the candidate under an employment contract.
- The host organisation will ensure that the researcher is covered under the social security scheme that is applied to employers within the respective country, or under a social security scheme that provides coverage for at least sickness and maternity benefits, invalidity and accidents at work and occupational diseases, and covers the researcher in every place at which Marie Skłodowska-Curie DN activities will take place. The exact conditions will differ per country.
- To cover personal household, relocation and travel expenses, 600€/month gross will be paid to each candidate. This amount is also subject to local taxes, social security deductions etc.
- When applicable, family allowance may also be provided in the amount of 660€/month. This amount is subject to local taxes, social security deductions etc. Other possible allowances include long-term leave and special needs and more information can be provided if requested.
- The fellows will benefit from the ICEBIO Training Programme designed to exploit the multidisciplinary skills of our network. To meet the challenges of this innovative research project, excellent and creative scientists are required, skilled in high-end technologies, with broad expertise and able to translate scientific knowledge into innovation. ICEBIO will offer an international, multidisciplinary and inter-sectorial, custom developed training programme that promotes scientific excellence and exploits the expertise and infrastructure present in the consortium.
Candidates can only apply for a position in a country different from the one they have lived in for most of the time in the last three years. At the time of recruitment by the host organisation, researchers should not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment date. Candidates CANNOT have been awarded a doctoral degree yet in any field.
We will choose candidates that fit best for the different projects according to the following steps:
- Candidates should visit the ICEBIO website to consult the job offers (in multiple countries and host institutions) and follow the application criteria at the host institutions for the position(s) they are interested in applying for. Open positions can be found under the Project tab on the ICEBIO website here: http://www.icebio.eu/pages/Job%20opps/index.html
- Eligibility check: applications will be reviewed for eligibility based on the criteria listed under requirements.
- Eligible candidates will be ranked and shortlisted candidates will be contacted for an online interview. Those not shortlisted will receive a notification re. the status of their application and may request further details about why they were not shortlisted.
- Notification of the selection outcome. After interviews, candidates will be offered a position or will be informed about the rejection decision.
The evaluation and selection procedure will occur in a non-discriminatory manner, promoting equal opportunities and no discrimination against researchers in any way, including gender diversity or other intersectional factors. We strongly encourage women and other under-represented groups to apply.
