Offer Description
The Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research (MPS) in Göttingen, Germany, invites applications for two PhD positions in Computational Flow Physics and Data Assimilation. The positions are available in the Max Planck Research Group ComPhyDA starting as early as 1 October 2022 for a period of three years. An extension to four years might be possible in the special case. The exact start
date is negotiable. Turbulence plays a very important role in many applications, ranging from geophysics and astrophysics to engineering. In our solar system, turbulence is often driven by thermal effect, rotation, and magnetic field. In this project you will use high-fidelity simulation tools, including direct numerical simulations, data assimilation, and machine learning, to study the physics of turbulence, focusing on convection and dynamos. Depending on the interest and qualifications of the candidates, the specific topic can be:
1. Turbulence simulations in the geostrophic regime.
2. Data-driven method for Navier-Stokes equations.
Applications will be reviewed constantly until the positions are filled. There is no specific deadline for the application. Remuneration is according to the German public salary scale TVöD E13 (65%). Social security benefits are in accordance with the public service regulations.
How to apply
To apply for one of the PhD projects in the ComFyDA research group, you will be submitting an off-cycle application to the International Max Planck Research School for Solar System Science at the University of Göttingen. Please apply online via the IMPRS online application portal. In the "Funding line", please specify MPRG ComFyDA as the funding source. In the "Project selection", please specify MPRG ComFyDA as the research group, and Dr. Zhu as the project advisor, and give us a very brief summary of what you would like to do in this project.
Portal for application: https://www.application.mps.mpg.de/public/
Please register and then submit your application directly as it is an off-cycle application.
