Offer Description

Workplan: The selected candidate will develop his work within the framework of a working group on "Art and Technology" of the Laboratory of Cinema and Philosophy, IFILNOVA. The research work will focus on the relationship between artistic practices and the development of new technologies, with the main purpose of analyzing, evaluating and critically discussing the way in which the alliance between art and technology poses new challenges and offers new ways of responding to contemporary issues related to social, political and economic paradigms.

 

The research program will include the organization of an international conference on the subject and a cycle of films or an event that brings together different artistic practices on the topic. The central idea is to address and explore the potential, the challenges, the consequences, and the aesthetic, social, political and economic implications of the relationship between art and technology in contemporary times.

 

Within this framework, the research program will:

 

1) Try to understand how the relationship between art and technology raises profound philosophical challenges and questions;

 
2) Approach and philosophically analyze concrete practices, discussing more general issues and those related to specific social and cultural contexts. 

 

Accordingly, the grant holder is expected to participate in the organization of an international conference and in the programming of a film cycle or event that gathers different artistic practices. Work towards at least one publication on the topic of Art and Technology, possibly co-authored with other members of IFILNOVA, is expected. The grant holder is also expected to actively participate in the meetings of the research program, as well as in project meetings and other events of IFILNOVA (such as the regular “CineLab Permanent Seminar”).

 

Duration: The grant is awarded for 12 months, with no possibility of extension (funding is secured within the project and complying with article 7º, n.º 3 d) from FCT regulations referred in n.º 4 of this call). The grant is expected to start 1 April 2023.

 

It is mandatory to submit applications with the following documents:

 

a)    PhD Certificate;

b)    Curriculum Vitae;

c)    Statement of interest of 1 page;

d)    2 exemplary publications

e)    Declaration that, with the signing of the scholarship contract in question, the maximum period of 3 years in this type of grant will not be exceed and that the candidate has not already been a recipient of a post-doctoral grant at NOVA FCSH;

In the case of PhDs obtained in foreign higher education institutions, it is necessary to present the recognition of the degrees obtained, in accordance with DL Nº 66/2018, of August 16th; or, in the absence of recognition at the time of application, a sworn statement that this recognition will be made before the contracting of the grant in case the candidate is selected.

The work will be carried out at the NOVA Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the NOVA University of Lisbon, under the scientific supervision of Patrícia Castello Branco.

Specific Requirements

For the candidate to be considered, at least two publications in scientific journals in a relevant area are necessary. Strong and demonstrable expertise in the organization of events, cinema cycles and scientific conferences will be an extra asset.

According to the scales for Research Fellowships awarded by FCT in Portugal (http://www.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/valores), the amount of the monthly tax-free allowance is € 1 741 paid by bank transfer.

Grant holders who are not covered by any social protection regime can exercise their right to social security through adherence to the voluntary social insurance regime (SSV), under the terms of the Contributory Schemes of the Social Security System. This scheme is entirely covered by the FCT’s contributions under the terms and within the limits provided for in article 10th of the Statute of Scientific Research Fellow, approved by Law nr. 40/2004, of August 18, as worded by Decree-Law nr. 123/2019, of August 28.

To be considered and evaluated, the application must follow the rules of the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT):

 

a) the doctoral degree must have been obtained within the last 3 years, counting from the application deadline;

b) the PhD cannot have been obtained at IFILNOVA;

c) the candidate must not exceed, with the conclusion of the grant contract in question, including possible renewals, an accumulated period of three years in this type of grant, consecutive or interpolated;

d) the candidate must not have previously held a post-doctoral research grant contract with NOVA FCSH.

 

In order to sign the fellowship contract (but not for the application submission), foreign applicants must present the recognition of foreign academic degrees and diplomas as well as the conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese classification scale, which can be required in any public higher education institution, or in the Directorate General for Higher Education (DGES).

Selection process

The selection methods to be used are as follows. Each element will be evaluated on a scale 0-20 points with the following weight:

 

·      Suitability and potential of CV: 40%;

·      Statement of interest of 1 page, indicating how the applicant intends to develop her/his work: 30%;

·      Quality and relevance of the exemplary publications: 30%.

 

Should the jury consider it necessary, candidates with a score of 15 or more points may be invited for an interview, evaluated on a scale of 0-20 points. In this case, the weighted score of the first stage (3 elements above) will correspond to 80% of the total final score and the interview to 20%.

 

Only candidates who score 15 or higher (0-20) will be attributed the grant.
