Offer Description
OFFER DESCRIPTION:
ECOMATES “Electrochemical conversion of CO2 into added value products via highly selective bimetallic MATerials and innovative process dESign” is recruiting 10 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) to undertake projects on the valorization of CO2 by electrochemical transformation into value-added chemicals.
This project has received funding from European Union's Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Europe Horizon Europe (HORIZON) Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Networks (MSCA-DN) under the Grant Agreement 101072830. More information on ECOMATES can be found at www.msca-dn-ecomates.eu and https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101072830.
The doctoral candidates will be hired in one of the following institutions: Politecnico di Torino (2 positions), Italian Institute of Technology (1 position), University of Montpellier (1 position), University of Iceland (1 position), Trinity College of Dublin (1 position), European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (1 position), Flemish Institute for Technological Research (1 position), Advent Energy (1 position) and APRIA System (1 position).
The offered positions are available for a duration of 36 months. Applications are due by the 15th of March 2023. The PhD starting dates will be no later than the 1st of November 2023.
THE ECOMATES NETWORK:
ECOMATES is a Doctoral Network of the Marie Sklodowska-Curie action program that aims at making significant breakthrough and advancement in the electrochemical CO2 conversion technology with respect to the current reported strategies by pursuing an in depth study of the surface electronic properties of selected bimetallic electrocatalysts. The project will design and optimize novel catalysts and innovative electrodes and processes. The activities on catalyst development will combine experimental work and theoretical calculations, resulting in a deep understanding of the surface reaction mechanism and optimization and development of new catalysts with improved activity. Our focus will be on highly controlled Cu-based bimetallic surfaces prepared via ALD, electrodeposition and hydro/solvothermal route.
The ECOMATES MSCA-DN will train 10 Doctoral Candidates (DCs) who will perform research in top European laboratories guided by current European leaders of the electrocatalysis technologies, both at experimental and computational level. Each candidate will develop a specific project under the supervision of a Principal Investigator within the ECOMATES network.
ECOMATES DCs will be enrolled in PhD programs of top European universities. Each DC will be involved in local programs at the recruiting institution and will have access to seminars, graduate courses, training and scientific activities. ECOMATES DCs will be fully integrated in the research laboratories and R&D departments of their host institutions, participating in the day-to-day scientific life of their groups, which includes project discussions, group meetings, interaction with visiting scientists, institutional seminars, etc.
ECOMATES will organize network wide interdisciplinary and intersectoral training events by systematically involving the academic and private sector. All DCs, beside developing the skills required to carry out their specific PhD project, will acquire the knowledge required to go from CO2RR catalyst design to CO2RR electrolyser construction thanks to the consecutive and high-level training events devised and set-up specifically for this Doctoral Network.
Further, every DC will be engaged in research-based, intersectoral and international secondments within the network.
SCIENTIFIC PROJECT:
Main aim of this proposal is to make a significant breakthrough in the development of the electrochemical CO2 conversion route for the production of value-added chemicals. Both C1 (CO and formic acid) or C2 (ethylene) products are targeted. This objective will be achieved via the advancement of novel catalyst materials, chemistries and electrolyser cell designs. In this respect, ECOMATES’ ambition is to contribute to help the environment in utilizing the CO2 released from anthropogenic sources and thus assisting the natural carbon cycle. An electrolyser based on the catalysts developed within ECOMATES once coupled with a renewable energy source such as photovoltaics would “mimic” the role of photosynthetic plants, by converting and storing energy into chemical bonds by electrochemical reduction of CO2 into valuable chemicals and fuels.
This ambitious plan will be achieved within this Marie-Curie Doctoral Network by training a new generation of scientists who will bring innovation in the field of electrocatalysis with particular emphasis on the design of new nanomaterials and nanostructures based on Cu/M bimetallic compounds (M indicates a secondary metal species) with improved selectivity and efficiency towards CO2 reduction to value-added products. Specific scientific and technological objectives of the proposed research and training program will be:
- the synthesis and characterization of Cu/M nanomaterials as innovative CO2RR electrocatalysts,
- the understanding and design of CO2RR Cu/M catalysts via simulations and in situ operando measurements,
- the realization, characterization and integration of innovative electrodes into a CO2RR electrolyser.
AVAILABLE PhD PROJECTS:
- DC1: Synthesis and characterization of bimetallic Cu/M catalysts via ALD
- DC2: Synthesis and characterization of bimetallic Cu/M catalysts via hydro/solvothermal methods
- DC3: Synthesis and characterization of bimetallic Cu/M catalysts via electrodeposition
- DC4: Computer aided design of bimetallic compound surfaces with improved CO2RR selectivity
- DC5: Identification of reaction mechanism and estimate of reaction rates
- DC6: Discovery of bimetallic catalysts via machine learning algorithms
- DC7: Operando X-ray analysis of bimetallic electrocatalysts
- DC8: Development and upscaling of gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) for electrochemical CO2 reduction
- DC9: Design and optimization of membranes for CO2RR processes
- DC10: Design and testing of a lab scale electrolyser
For a detailed description of the project, please go to the ECOMATES website (https://www.msca-dn-ecomates.eu).
