Offer Description
Research group: Vít Latzel, Department of Population Ecology, Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic is opening a new PhD student position in ecological epigenetics.
The three-year position (with the possibility of extension) is available from March 2023, but the start can be postponed to summer 2023. The research will be carried out at the Institute of Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic (Department of Population ecology, https://www.ibot.cas.cz/popekol/language/en/) and Charles University in Prague. Both belong among the best research institutions in the Czech Republic offering internationally well-established personnel and excellent technical facilities. Prague is a great city to live in, often ranked among the most beautiful cities in the world offering great cultural and social activities. The salary will secure financial independence for the student.
Your responsibilities and duties will include:
- Investigating the role of biotic and abiotic interactions on the induction of transgenerational effects and their role in adaptation in a clonal plant;
- Focusing particularly on the role of epigenetic variation (DNA methylation) in transgenerational effects and gene expression;
- Comparing the heritability of environmentally induced epigenetic variation between clonal and sexual generations.

- Proficiency in molecular methods (whole genome (bisulfite) sequencing is preferable but not mandatory);
- Background in biostatistics;
- Master’s degree in biology;

INSTITUTE OF BOTANY
The Institute of Botany of the Czech Academy of Sciences is one of the main centres of botanical research in the Czech Republic and carries out fundamental research on plant species, populations and communities. It offers researchers an excellent environment for field research, common garden and laboratory experiments as well as laboratory analyses.

Průhonice is small town just beyond the boundaries of the city of Prague and is famous for its park and castle. The Průhonice Park is a beautiful natural park founded in the late 19th century. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and attracts thousands of visitors every year. The offices of some of the Departments of the IB Průhonice Division are located in the Průhonice Castle which provides an interesting backdrop to the busy life of a modern research institution.
