Offer Description
Work Plan
• State-of-the-art survey in language models (LLMs), vision and language models (LVLMs), and trusted AI.
• Establishment of the model evaluation setup in the respective task, including preparation of appropriate datasets and benchmarks.
• Processing and structuring of Portuguese Navy documents and protocols.
• Research strategies to generate factual, reliable, and safe responses by LLMs and LVLMs (multimodal).
• Integration of the developed contributions in the project prototype.
• Coordination of activities with the other project partners.
• Production of reports and scientific articles.
Workplace The work will be developed at NOVA Laboratory for Computer Science and Informatics / Departamento de Informática / Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, under the supervision of Professor João Magalhães and Professor David Semedo.
Fellowship duration The scholarship will last for 8 months, starting on May, 2025 and eventually renewable during the duration of the project.

* In case of foreign academic degrees, and to guarantee the application of the principle of equal treatment to applicants with national and foreign academic degrees, it is mandatory to submit the recognition of such degrees and the conversion of the respective final grade to the Portuguese grading scale.

• The documents proving this situation must be presented, at the latest, until the stage of contracting the scholarship, and before that, they can be replaced by a declaration of honour.
Preferential factors:
• Expertise in machine learning, information retrieval, natural language processing.
• Expertise in conversational models and systems.
• Expertise in vision models in language.
• Experience in pre-training and fine-tuning of large language models.
• Experience in Retrieval-Augmented Generation with language models.
• Programming experience in Python and PyTorch
Additional Information
Monthly maintenance allowance amount: The amount of the monthly maintenance allowance corresponds to €1.040.98 euros with reference to the table of values of the scholarships awarded directly by FCT, I.P. in the country, and the payment is made monthly by bank transfer.
Selection criteria
A classification will be made, on a scale of 0 to 20, taking into account the weighting of the following selection methods: a) motivation letter (20%), b) curriculum vitae (40%), and c) experience in the area of research/previous knowledge of concepts and technologies relevant to
the execution of the project (40%).All applications will be evaluated on a scale from 0 to 20. Candidates who do not achieve a minimum score of 15, as determined by the selection committee based on the evaluation criteria, will not be hired.

Form of advertising/notification of results
The evaluation results proposed by the juri will be notified, up to 90 days after the deadline for the submission of applications, by email, of the results proposed by the jury, with access to the minutes and the final ranking list.
After notification, candidates will have 10 working days to comment on the draft decision (prior hearing of interested parties, under the terms of the Code of Administrative Procedure). The final decision will be taken after the expiry of the prior hearing period, again notified to all candidates by e-mail. Of this final decision the candidates can file a complaint within 15 working days (to the e-mail address used for the notification), or a hierarchical appeal, within
30 working days, addressed to NOVA.ID.FCT's Board through the address to coord1@novaidfct.pt.
