PhD position in graphene electronics

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in the Nanoscale Device Group at the Como campus (L-NESS) of Politecnico di Milano (Polytechnic University of Milan), Italy. The starting date is 1 May 2020 or as soon as possible after. The PhD position is for 3 years, after which the candidate is expected to defend the PhD thesis.

About the University: Polytechnic University of Milan is the largest technical university in Italy, which is currently ranked as the 16th best technical university in the world. The university has several campuses outside Milan. This position is in Como, a city on Lake of Como in the vicinity of Alps and at the border with Switzerland.

Job description: The candidate's research will focus on the investigation of graphene and related 2D-material nanoelectronic devices. The project is devoted towards the long term perspective of establishing graphene based electronics technologies, which are capable of competing with state-of-the-art technologies. The ultimate goal of the project is the realization of 2D electronic circuits. The following techniques will be used in device fabrication and characterization: e-beam lithography (on Raith eLINE system), scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, reactive ion etching, e-beam evaporation, electrical measurements on a probe station (both dc and real-time high-frequency), and S-parameter measurements.

The candidate: We are looking for highly motivated candidates interested in graphene nanoelectronics. They should hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in physics, electronics, materials science or related disciplines. Ability to collaborate with scientists from different disciplines, locally and abroad is essential. Communication skills in English are expected. A background in physics of semiconductor devices, electronics, and nanofabrication is desirable but not essential.

Funding: The scholarship is available for 3 years and is funded by the Graphene Flagship project - a €1 billion initiative of the European Commission. The monthly net salary is €1250, with additional funds for books, summer/winter schools, workshops and conferences. In case of a stay abroad (up to 6 months) at one of the Flagship partners, the salary is increased by 50%.
