Offer Description

The Iscte Research Unit DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, Centre for the Study of Socioeconomic Change and the Territory is calling for applications for one (1) Post-Doctoral Research Grant for the ERC Advanced Grant Project ArchLabour - Architecture, Colonialism and Labour - European Research Council (ERC) ref. 101096606 (2024-2029), under the following conditions: 

Expected Tasks 

  1. Support in research and review of scientific literature relevant to the project.
  2. Archival research, particularly architectural documentation in national archives; processing and systematization of collected information.
  3. Validation and investigation of the project’s case studies, particularly on military resettlements, military colonies, schools, and road construction.
  4. Preparation and publication of scientific output (journal articles, book chapters);
  5. Participation in study missions and fieldwork.
  6. Support in organizing and participating in project dissemination initiatives (seminars/exhibition/publications).

PhD Degree in Architecture obtained no more than two years prior to the date of submission to this fellowship (eliminatory factor);

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and of article 4(2)(e) of Decree- Law no. 60/2018, of August 3, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the act of hiring.

Experience in investigation in the field of Architecture (especially in archives, conferences and exhibitions organization and participation in national and international scientific gatherings) (eliminatory factor);

Experience in archival and field works in Africa, especially in the geography related to the project ArchLabour (eliminatory factor);

Experience in coordinating and undertaking study missions in Africa in the geography related to the project ArchLabour (preferential factor);

Research in line with the objectives and research field of the project ArchLabour (preferential factor);

Experience in raising and securing research fundings (preferential factor);

Proficiency in Portuguese (eliminatory factor);

Proficiency in English (preferential factor).

Specific Requirements

Participation in a FCT financed investigation project (eliminatory factor); 

Publication of a book as author, co-author or editor (preferential factor);

Four years (minimum) of teaching experience in the field of architecture, design, art history in a higher education course (preferential factor);

Benefits

The amount of the grant, on an exclusive and full-time basis, corresponds to €1801.00, according to the table of grants awarded directly or indirectly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf), paid monthly by bank transfer to the holder. The grant holder may also be reimbursed the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance if they join this scheme. The grant holder will benefit from personal accident insurance. The project includes additional and specific funds to cover fieldwork missions to be carried out by the grant holder in the regions included in the work plan.

The fellowship will have a duration of 24 months, starting on the 1 January 2025, possibly renewable for the same or different periods, up to the maximum limit of the approved funding or up to the maximum duration of this type of fellowship (whichever comes first), and may under no circumstances exceed the limits of paragraphs 3 and 6 of article 7 of Regulation no. 950/2019, of 29 November, published in Diário da República, no. 241, 2nd Series, of 16 December (FCT, I.P. Research Fellowship Regulation). 

Eligibility criteria

The following are eligible for the award of the grant:

a) Nationals or citizens of other European Union member states;
b) Citizens of third countries;
c) Stateless persons;
d) Beneficiaries of political refugee status.

Selection process

The selection process will be based on the following criteria, in descending order of importance: 

a) The candidate's academic curriculum relevant to the area of research; 

b) Motivation letter;

c) Interview (only candidates selected by the jury on the basis of criteria a) and b).
