Notice no. 22604/2024/2/2024 published in Diário da República, 2nd series, no. 198, 11/10/2024

Deadline: 04/11/2024

Notice for International Call to hire an Assistant Researcher

Under the terms of Order No. 181/2023, of 04 January, by delegation of powers, the Director of the Faculty of Science and Technology, University NOVA of Lisbon, Prof. Dr. José Júlio Alves Alferes, makes known that, according to dispach of 30/09/2024, it is open an international call, with the internal reference "Ass.Inv.6-DQ", for the recruitment of a one Research Assistant, under an uncertain contract term, in accordance with Regulation No. 393/2018, published in the Diário da República No. 123, 2nd series of June 28, 2018, within the project HORIZON-MSCA-2021-DN-01 – MEM-fast n. No.: 101120264, funded by the Horizon Europe program, in progress at the Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa.

In compliance with paragraph h) of article 9 of the Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, NOVA University of Lisbon, as an employer, actively promotes a policy of equal opportunities between men and women in access to employment and professional progression, taking scrupulous care to avoid any form of discrimination. In this sense, terms such as ‘candidate’, ‘selected’, ‘recruited’, ‘hired’, ‘author’, ‘researcher’, among others that refer to people applying for the competition, are not used in this Notice to refer to their gender.

I - Workplace:

The Assistant Researcher’s working place shall be at the premises of the Department of Chemistry of Faculdade de Ciências e Tecnologia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa, in the framework of Associate Laboratory for Green Chemistry, located at Campus de Caparica, Portugal (supervisor: Dr. Carla Portugal), and will perform interships of 5 months at  CNR-ITM, Dr. Lidietta Giorno, M24-M29, “study of molecular probes for in situ monitoring of onset biofouling on polymeric membranes, and comparison between commercial and other membranes developed.”, and B4Ceramics, Dr. Haris Kadrispahic and Dr. Nanette Zahrtmann, M34-M39, “study of fouling phenomena on ceramic and polymeric membranes.”

He/She shall travel, in Portugal or abroad, as required by his/her attributions or as necessary for his/her activity.

II - Activities and Functions:

The Assistant Researcher (PhD student) shall be responsible for the tasks allocated to FCT NOVA) in the project regarding the development of in-situ monitoring techniques based on the use of molecular probes able to report phenomena at nanoscale. Two main problems will be addressed: the development of biofouling and the onset of scaling, at the membrane surface. The probes to be used can modify their fluorescence emission behavior when specific compounds are in their vicinity. In a previous study we demonstrated the possibility to monitor temperature at a molecular scale, in membrane distillation processes, using as a fluorescence reporter a ruthenium-based fluorophore

In the proposed project we aim to respond/monitor:

  1. The concentration of dissolved oxygen (extremely important for monitoring of the onset of biofouling);
  2. The concentration of calcium ions, Ca2+. Special focus is given to the selection of appropriate probes based on their excitation/emission spectra and ability to change their response when exposed to minor changes in the concentration of the target solutes (O2 and Ca2+) and optimize their load (in the range of 10-6 - 10-7 molar) into the ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes to be studied;
  3. Calibrate these probes under flowing conditions, in specifically designed modules, in order to measure in-situ and in real-time the concentration of oxygen at the membrane surface (which will be used as an indication of the onset of a biofilm);
  4. Also, the same procedure will be followed for the probe selected for Ca2+ monitoring to recognize under which conditions scaling starts occurring;
  5. Understand the impact of environmental conditions (feed composition, pH, ionic strength and temperature) and of operating conditions (fluid dynamics of the feed stream, transmembrane pressure) on the development of a biofilm and/or the onset of scaling;
  6. With the knowledge gathered, derive specific recommendations (experimentally validated) for process operation (UF, NF, RO), namely in what concerns the environmental and the operating conditions. Case studies will include real water from biorefinery processes such as the processing of biological media by UF and NF, as well as the use of RO in operations relevant in biorefineries (such as water softening).
