Offer Description

About TALOS-Project The objective of the Talos ERA Chair Project funded by the European Union is to create a new centre of excellence in Artificial Intelligence for SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) that will interconnect several departments of UoC departments at Rethymnon (the Schools of Philosophy, Education and Social Sciences, coordinating department: Department of Philology) under a common research and teaching agenda. TALOS will combine the strengths of neural networks with symbolic reasoning to create a scalable, sustainable and explainable representation of knowledge in the Humanities and the Social Sciences. In order to reach this general objective, six related Research Topics (RT) will be pursued. This call for PhD is part of the RT2 "Classifying and naming objects". Position Description: The preservation and dissemination of archaeological objects is vital for the understanding and appreciation of the Cultural Heritage. Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers innovative solutions to these challenges. For example, Machine Learning models can be trained to identify and classify artefacts, even from fragmented or incomplete specimens, improving the cataloguing process. Knowledge Graphs enable the integration of different types of data (e.g., text, images, metadata), making it easier to manage and access comprehensive information about artifacts. Ontologies provide a structured framework for describing and classifying artefacts, ensuring consistency and interoperability across different collections and databases and enhancing search and retrieval. Terminology (controlled vocabulary) ensures consistent and accurate descriptions of artefacts, reducing ambiguity and improving communication between researchers and users. Among the different applications and benefits of AI, we can mention the development of web platforms using AI and Knowledge Graphs to facilitate public access and understanding of artefacts, such as virtual museums offering exhibitions based on digitized artefacts. The candidate will propose a research project that describes a structured approach to explore these technologies and their applications to improve the management, analysis, and the dissemination of archaeological objects. For example, to reproduce and organize collections in the form of knowledge graphs to facilitate the opening and retrieval of structured data based on the Semantic Web. Deliverables/expected results: 1. PhD thesis in Artificial Intelligence and Cultural Heritage (first complete version) 2. Development of web applications to facilitate access to archaeological objects 3. Presentations (Conferences, Workshops) & Publications (at least 1)
