Offer Description

The Iscte Research Unit DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, Centre for the Study of Socioeconomic Change and the Territory is calling for applications for one (1) Doctoral Grant for the ERC Advanced Grant Project ArchLabour - Architecture, Colonialism and Labour - European Research Council (ERC) ref. 101096606 (2024-2029), under the following conditions: 

Expected Tasks 

1. Support in researching and reviewing scientific literature for the project; 

2. Archive research, especially architectural documentation, in national archives; processing and systematization of the information collected;

3. Validation and research into the project's case studies, specifically transport networks, mineral extraction settlements and energy production; 

4. Production and publication of scientific output (journal articles, book chapters); 

5. Participation in study missions and fieldwork; 

6. Support in the organisation of and participation in initiatives to disseminate the project's results (seminars/exhibitions/publications).

MA degree in Architecture with a classification equal or higher than 14 (out of 20) (eliminatory factor);

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and of article 4(2)(e) of Decree- Law no. 60/2018, of August 3, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the act of hiring.

Specific Requirements

Successful experience in an individual application for research funding (preferential factor)

Participation in a FCT financed investigation project (eliminatory factor);

Participation and Experience in the Organization of Research Field Trip on the Case Study countries (Angola, Moçambique, São Tomé e Príncipe, Guiné-Bissau, Cabo Verde) (preferential factor);

Experience in investigation in the field of Architecture (especially in archives, conferences and exhibitions, organization and participation in national and international scientific gatherings) (eliminatory factor);

Research in line with the objectives and research field of the project ArchLabour (preferential factor).

Additional Information

Benefits

The amount of the grant, on an exclusive and full-time basis, corresponds to €1259,64, according to the table of grants awarded directly or indirectly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf), paid monthly by bank transfer to the holder. The grant holder may also be reimbursed the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance if they join this scheme. The grant holder will benefit from personal accident insurance. The project includes additional and specific funds to cover fieldwork missions to be carried out by the grant holder in the regions included in the work plan.

The fellowship will have a duration of 7 months, starting on the 1 December 2024, possibly renewable for the same or different periods, up to the maximum limit of the approved funding or up to the maximum duration of this type of fellowship (whichever comes first), and may under no circumstances exceed the limits of paragraphs 3 and 6 of article 7 of Regulation no. 950/2019, of 29 November, published in Diário da República, no. 241, 2nd Series, of 16 December (FCT, I.P. Research Fellowship Regulation). 

Selection process
  1. The selection methods to be used will be a curricular assessment and an interview.
  2. In the interview topics related to the candidate's work plan, previous experience, motivation and CV will be discussed.
  3. The jury reserves the right not to award a grant if none of the candidates matches the desired profile. 
  4. This competition may be cancelled until the final list of candidates has been approved but will remain valid for the duration of the project.

Copy of proof of completion of MA degree; 

and other documents deemed relevant to the application. 

If the qualification has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of 16 August, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and diplomas in Higher Education, awarded by foreign higher education institutions and article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law no. 60/2018, of 03 August, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the hiring act. Documents proving that the candidate holds academic degrees and diplomas, or that they have been recognised when awarded by foreign higher education institutions, may be waived at the application stage and replaced by a declaration of honour by the candidate in accordance with the appropriate draft, with verification of this condition only occurring at the scholarship contracting stage.

The Research Grant will be awarded upon the conclusion of a contract between Iscte and the grant holder as per the terms of the minute at https://www.dinamiacet.iscte-iul.pt/concursos, under the terms of the Research Grant Holder Statute (Law no. 40/2004 of 18 August and Decree-Law no. 123/2019 of 28 August) and in accordance with the legislation and Research Grant Regulations of the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. in force, no. 950/2019 of 16 December 2019 and First amendment to the Research Grant Regulations of FCT, I.P., No. 643/2021 of 14 July 2021 (https://www.fct.pt/financiamento/programas-de-financiamento/bolsas/).
