Offer Description

Post-doctoral position available within the  SUPPORT project  (funded by EDCTP3):  action Supporting the next generation of African researchers on preventing HIV pediatric mortality through a training network’, a highly multidisciplinary, international and competitive training program in pediatrics research.

RESEARCH PROJECT: EVALUATE VIEWS, PERCEPTIONS, AND ATTITUDES ON POST-DISCHARGE MORTALITY AND HEALTH-SEEKING BEHAVIOR IN LIFE-TREATING SCENARIOS FOR CHILDREN LIVING WITH HIV

Beyond the clinical factors, inadequate health-seeking behavior and poor access to hospital care contribute to the high occurrence of post-discharge mortality among children. Barriers to seeking care in Sub-Saharan Africa are complex and can include financial constraints, distance to health facilities, cultural practices, gender dynamics, limited knowledge or information, and health facility disincentives. All of this can impact post-discharge mortality. Following the EMPIRICAL study, several relevant points related to PMTCT programs have been raised that can impact infant mortality—incident maternal HIV infection during pregnancy and breastfeeding with delayed infant diagnosis, poor adherence to maternal ART and infant prophylaxis, and poor retention in care are common, particularly in families with unfavorable social situations. This project will aim to address these gaps.
