Offer Description

At the Georg-August-University Göttingen – Department of Physics, Institute of Materials Physics there is a position to be filled:

Postdoc Position in the field of Environmental Transmission Electron Microscopy

(Salary group 13 TV-L, 100%)

The position can be started as soon as possible and is limited for 3 years.

The comprehensive understanding of the real structure of the electrocatalyst water interface and catalytic mechanism on the atomic scale is essential for breaking the limits in electrochemical water splitting. The main goal of this proposed project is thus correlating atomic structure information of active states of oxide catalysts with measurements of reaction products in oxygen evolution reaction by establishing a local mass spectroscopy probe in in-situ ETEM experiments.

You will be part of a team of young scientists working with a number of different in-situ TEM techniques in the Göttingen Environmental Transmission Electron Microscope. You will get the opportunity to establish a local mass spectrometer probe in differentially pumped ETEM system in order to measure the chemical environment of samples and the reaction products which are formed in oxygen evolution electrocatalysis close to the electron transparent catalyst sample. You will apply various in-situ, high-resolution and analytical TEM techniques such as HRTEM, STEM, EELS or holography in order to establish the correlation between atomic structure in the active state of the catalyst and the reaction products as well as catalytic turn over.

Active collaboration within the Team in Göttingen and the project partner who delivers well-characterized nanoparticle is expected.

Your profile:

  • You have a Master’s degree in physics, materials sciences, or closely related subject areas
  • You have a PhD with a topic in the field of electron microscopy or catalysis
  • You have practical experience in professionally operating a Transmission Electron Microscope.
  • You are a highly motived researcher who wishes to drive forward the field of in-situ electron microscopy and fundamental understanding of materials in non-equilibrium states.
  • Excellent communication skills in English are required.
  • You are a team worker and self-motivated to attain project goals

Preferred Experiences

  • Experience or interest in quantitative TEM image simulation.
  • Experience in in-situ or ETEM experiments
