Offer Description

The Iscte Research Unit DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte, Centre for the Study of Socioeconomic Change and the Territory is calling for applications for one (1) Doctoral Fellow for the ERC Advanced Grant Project ArchLabour - Architecture, Colonialism and Labour - European Research Council (ERC) ref. 101096606 (2024-2028).

Expected Tasks 
•    You will focus on theoretical framework for evaluating mass labour and conduct archival management and investigation work into a corresponding case study or typology. It is recommended that you work on a particular case study mentioned for ‘your’ line of inquiry, but you are encouraged to bring your own ideas to the topic and to help shape research on both the line of inquiry and case study. 
•    It is expected that the doctoral programme and work plan will be in line with the group's theme.
•    You will contribute to the outputs of ArchLabour, most notably by your archival management skills tackling from identification, collection, arrangement, description, preservation, and use of the full range of historical documents in both institutional and private archives. 
•    You will also contribute to the outputs of ArchLabour by (co-) authoring publications; co-organizing workshops, conferences and lecture series; presenting your results at international workshops and conferences; and contributing to the project’s website and social media accounts.  
•    You will assist the team with administrative and organizational support. 
•    You will actively contribute to the activities of the research group A+I Architecture Infrastructures. 
•    You will, where appropriate, share research data and collaborate with other team members. 
•    Possibility of a field trip, depending on the work programme to be agreed

MA degree in Archival Science or in alternative in History (African Studies, or History of Science) to be completed by the start date of the position, aiming to specialize in historical archives. 

If the qualification has been conferred by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, under the terms of article 25 of Decree-Law no. 66/2018, of August 16, which approves the legal regime for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and of article 4(2)(e) of Decree- Law no. 60/2018, of August 3, and any formalities established therein must be fulfilled by the date of the act of hiring. 

Specific Requirements

Enrolment in a doctoral course leading to a degree (preferred)

Motivation to integrate work as an early career researcher on an international research team.

Knowledge in colonial history and/or the history of Portuguese colonial Public Works and relevant research experience (preferred);

Benefits

The amount of the grant corresponds to €1259,64, according to the table of grants awarded directly or indirectly by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf), paid monthly by bank transfer to the holder. The grant holder may also be reimbursed the amount corresponding to the Voluntary Social Insurance if they join this scheme. 

The fellowship will be starting in January 2025, possibly renewable for the same or different periods, up to the maximum limit of the approved funding or up to the maximum duration of this type of fellowship (whichever comes first), and may under no circumstances exceed the limits of paragraphs 3 and 6 of article 7 of Regulation no. 950/2019, of 29 November, published in Diário da República, no. 241, 2nd Series, of 16 December (FCT, I.P. Research Fellowship Regulation). 

Access to office space and a laptop.

Possible funding for archival research and fieldwork and for attending workshops and conferences. 

Participation in a research group with international scholars funded by the prestigious European Research Council and in the interdisciplinary research group Cities and Territories hosted by DINAMIA’Cet-Iscte. 

Selection process
  1. The selection methods to be used will be a curricular assessment and an interview.
  2. In the interview topics related to the candidate's work plan, previous experience, motivation and CV will be discussed 
  3. The jury reserves the right not to award a grant if none of the candidates matches the desired profile. 
  4. This competition may be cancelled until the final list of candidates has been approved but will remain valid for the duration of the project.

Applications submission: 
Applications must be formalised by e-mail to archlabour.erc@gmail.com with the following reference "ARCHLABOUR PhD", accompanied by the following documents, all to be written in either Portuguese or English:  
A CV that also includes the name, position, institution and email address of 2 referees, who may be contacted for recommendation. 
A letter of motivation in which you state your interest in the position and how you fit the criteria. 
Document proving the country of residence, residence permit or other legally equivalent document, in the case of foreign citizens, valid at the start date of the scholarship. 
A copy of your MA degree, if already held.  
In case you hold a foreign degree in a language other than Dutch, French, German, English or Portuguese, please add a translation in one of these. 
If your MA degree is not yet in hand, please submit your BA degree and evidence of the imminent completion of your MA until the start of your contract (such as an attestation by your supervisor). 
A copy of your MA thesis. If the thesis is not yet complete, please submit a part of it (at least an abstract, the introduction and a full chapter) or another substantial piece of academic writing (such as BA thesis, MA research paper, publication, etc.).

The final results of the assessment will be publicised by means of a list of those admitted and excluded and a final ranking list, and all candidates will be notified in writing via email. The Hearing of Interested Parties takes place within 10 working days of the results being announced and should be formalised through the same email of the applications.
