Offer Description

Do you have a passion for plants and pollinators? Are you concerned about the consequences of pollinator decline for plant biodiversity? Do you want to understand how plants and pollinators interact and what this means for plant population persistence? Then we invite you to apply for a PhD position in the Plant Ecology and Nature Conservation group!

While there is a fairly good understanding of the negative consequences of pollinator declines for crops, we know much less about the consequences for wild plant communities. These communities are thought to be relatively resilient to changes in pollinator communities because they comprise many different species that may show different responses. However, knowledge of how ecological interactions between plants and pollinators influence the resilience of ecosystems to environmental perturbations is largely theoretical. Using a combination of empirical fieldwork and pollinator-dependent plant population models this PhD project aims to determine how plant communities respond to changes in pollinator communities.
The successful PhD candidate will need to conduct intensive fieldwork for two or three seasons. Activities include fieldwork preparation, estimation of pollinator visitation rates and seed set of plants; quantifying plant pollinator interaction networks, advanced statistical data analyses, plant population modelling and writing. The position is part of an EU project with standardized empirical work in a range of countries. The PhD candidate is responsible for data generation in the Netherlands, but will also be in the lead for part of the overall analysis of the study that examines how plants respond to changes in pollinator communities. A small part of the work comprises collection of socioeconomic data that is needed by partner institutes of the EU project.

You will work here
You will be embedded within the Plant Ecology and Nature Conservation group). Daily supervision will be done by prof.dr.ir.David Kleijn and dr.ir. Jeroen Scheper (You will be part of a 13 partner HorizonEurope project with seven focal areas scattered throughout the continent in which coordinated empirical work will take place. The intended starting date of the PhD is in January 2025.
