Selection procedure for a place covered by a three-year research grant on the topic “Natural Traces in forensic investigations – how pollen imprints can solve crime” as part of the international project “Natural Traces in forensic investigations – how the analysis of non-human evidence can solve crime – NATURAL TRACES – GA 101120165 (Horizon-MSCA-2022-DN-01)”.

Host offer for one PhD position in Palynology with a duration of three years, which can be joined by passing an entry examination. The annual amount of the research grant is  € 38.052,84 (gross of withholding taxes payable by the candidate and including board, lodging and return travel). If the candidate has family obligations at the deadline of the call (marriage, cohabitation if legally recognised, children), the annual amount of the research grant is € 44.473,56.

The position is open in the frame of the Horizon Europe MSCA DN project Natural Traces (Grant number 101120165), with University of Modena and Reggio Emilia - UNIMORE (Italy) as Host Institution.

The PhD position provides also for training periods in Italy and abroad, among the various partners involved in the project.

TOPIC:The project focuses on forensic palynology. The aim of the research is to extend the sampling methods and analysis of pollen and palynomorphs to dry (terrestrial) surfaces such as soil or clothing, or bodies, combining them with the sampling and analytical methods of forensic aerobiology. The study should aim to identify indicator species of botanical and geographical origin in palynological spectra, in accordance with the methods of palaeoecology, botany and ecology.

The candidate will participate in the project network by contributing to the development of palynological knowledge required for forensic interpretation, as well as developing new techniques. It will analyse pollen and palynomorphs from different substrates (air, sediment and other surface samples, vehicles, clothing), linking data in particular to insects as pollen vectors and eDNA.

The candidate is therefore requested to have relevant experience in these fields.

Specific Requirements

Italian second cycle master's degree (“Laurea Magistrale”, under D.M. 270/04 or “Laurea Specialistica”, under D.M. 509/99) or Italian degree obtained prior to D.M. 509/99 (the previous Italian regulations) or Second cycle Master's degree obtained abroad, equivalent to the above-mentioned Italian degrees and recognized as suitable for the admission to doctoral program, in accordance with the provisions in art. 2 of this application procedure. At the date of the conclusion of the research grant contract, the early-stage researcher (ESR) must be within the fourth year of his/her research career (calculated as full-time equivalent) and must not have already obtained a doctoral degree. At the date of the conclusion of the contract of the research grant, the researcher must not have resided or carried out his/her main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the host organisation (in Italy) for more than 12 months in the immediately preceding 3 years.
