Offer Description

PhD Positions in Chemistry at the University of Graz (m/f/d)

We are offering PhD positions in Inorganic Chemistry, focusing on the synthesis of coordination compounds and their application in catalysis. The envisioned duration of the contract is 3 years.

Our research group aims to develop coordination compounds that mimic metalloenzyme active sites, enhancing our understanding of their functionality. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, international research team based in Graz. Group website: https://chemie.uni-graz.at/en/bioinorganic-and-coordination-chemistry/

Project Description

The PhD projects will focus on the development of water-soluble early transition metal compounds and exploring their catalytic properties. The projects are divided into three phases: synthesis, catalytic studies, and mechanistic elucidation. The first phase involves preparation of various compounds with a focus on achieving water solubility. Their catalytic activity will then be investigated for different organic reactions in water. This effort aims to reduce the reliance on toxic organic solvents where possible. The final phase will focus on carefully elucidating the catalytic mechanisms to develop more efficient catalysts and gain insights into possible enzymatic mechanisms. The candidate will utilize standard inert atmosphere techniques for synthesis and contemporary spectroscopic methods for analysis.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in chemistry or a related field
  • Proficiency in English
  • Experience in synthesizing coordination compounds is beneficial

Your responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive literature research at the start of your PhD journey.
