Offer Description
Project description
The recruited postdoctoral researcher will work together with Stijn Van Petegem and his team on the ERC project “Better safe than sorry? Identifying causes of overprotective parenting in a changing social world”. The broader project focuses on overprotective parenting (sometimes labeled “helicopter parenting” or “overparenting”) during adolescence and young adulthood. Whereas the implications of such parenting practices are well-documented, less is known regarding the causes of overprotective parenting. The overall goal is to identify potential determinants, by particularly focusing on the interplay between parent-related characteristics and macrocontextual factors linked to the socio-cultural and economic context. The project will bring together theories from multiple disciplines (including developmental psychology, social psychology, sociology, economics, and gender studies), thereby adopting a multi-method approach, relying on longitudinal, experimental, observational and cross-cultural research. The recruited postdoctoral researcher will be particularly responsible for the execution, follow-up and data-analysis of the observational study, and will be involved in the last wave of the longitudinal study.
