Offer Description
Attachment to SOB/D110/2024/1/KG-50-0102633
2 postdoctoral research positions in the scientific project „Limits of Structural Tractability” (acronym: BUKA), financed by the European Commission (grant agreement no 101126229)
Principal Investigator: Szymon Toruńczyk
The ERC project „Limits of Structural Tractability” (acronym: BUKA), led by dr hab. Szymon Toruńczyk, is offering 2 postdoctoral research positions in the Institute of Informatics at the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw.
Terms of employment
Selected candidates will be employed as full-time researcher (pol. adiunkt). The duration of employment is for one year, with possible extension for another 12 months. The starting date can be set between 1st of October 2024 and 1st of November 2024, up to an agreement between the candidates and the principal investigator. The offered salary combined (basic salary 8 180 PLN gross/month plus project bonus) is around 16 055 PLN per month pre-tax (around 3 700 EUR), which is more than enough for a comfortable life in Warsaw. The position comes with no teaching obligations and generous travel budget. Selected candidates will work on selected topics from the interface of structural graph theory, logic, and algorithms.
Description of the project
The combination of methods from logic and graph theory has been extremely successful in the design of algorithms, in complexity theory, and other areas of theoretical computer science. An example result in this area states that every graph property definable in first order logic can be decided in linear time (that is, very efficiently) on planar graphs. The goal of the project is to develop a structural theory of graph classes that enjoy similar algorithmic, combinatorial and logical properties. See
https://sites.google.com/view/buka-project/ for more details.
Requirements
We expect that candidates at the moment of employment hold a PhD degree in either mathematics or computer science. They should also have a strong background in at least one of the following fields: structural graph theory, algorithms and complexity, finite model theory, or model theory.
Applications
An application should include Curriculum Vitae that:
presents an overview of the background and scientific achievements of the candidate;
lists all the candidate’s research works (including not yet published manuscripts) and indicates
three most important of them;
gives a list of three experienced researchers that may serve as references for the candidate.
In addition to the above, there should be a signed cover letter addressed to the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw together with the personal data clause (attached). No research statements are required.
Applications, as well as further questions on both the scientific topic of the project and on formal details of the call procedure should be directed to dr hab. Szymon Toruńczyk: szymtor@mimuw.edu.pl
In order to apply for the position, candidates should send an e-mail and submit the documents as attached .pdf files.
Application deadline: June 27th 2024
Applications which do not satisfy the above requirements or are submitted after the deadline will not be considered for the position.
The applications will be evaluated by a selection committee appointed by the Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics, University of Warsaw. The committee may invite candidate to a meeting, which will be conducted remotely. The results of the competition will be sent to candidates electronically on July 31st 2024 at the latest. The competition is the first stage of the recruitment process as described in the Statute of the University of Warsaw, the recommendation by the selection committee being a basis for its subsequent stages.
