Offer Description
Are you looking for a workplace with short decision-making paths and good development opportunities? Do you want the opportunity to train as an Industrial PhD candidate while being part of Rottneros' exciting journey of development?
About the position
As a step in our strategy to develop the properties of our fiber for future products, we are now seeking a PhD candidate in collaboration with Karlstad University and the corporate research school EXACT (see: https://www.kau.se/pro2be/projekt/foretagsforskarskolan-exact).
The EXACT research school - Excellence in Advancing for a Circular Transition – combines bioeconomy with smart digitalization. The vision is to contribute to the circular transition and future-proofing of the Swedish process industry.
Rottneros manufactures several special types of pulp; for example, our pulp is used for electro-technical applications such as cables and transformers, and various types of filters. The project aims to build knowledge about the hornification of components in Rottneros' various paper pulps through several experimental studies. Hornification involves irreversible processes during drying that change fiber swelling, flexibility, and bonding capacity, affecting porosity and fiber bonding crucial for the strength of paper products. Now, we are looking for someone who can help us better understand the phenomena that occur during hornification mechanisms and fiber drying, which can lead to new drying strategies for pulp and more recycling cycles for recycled fibers. Deeper insights may suggest new or modified drying strategies so that in the future, we can help our customers achieve even higher quality in their products!
You will be employed by Rottneros while simultaneously studying to become an Industrial PhD at Karlstad University. Upon employment, an individual study plan will be established in consultation with the University and supervisors. You will combine studies and research at the company and the university. The education is estimated to take a total of 5 years, of which 4 years are dedicated to studies and research, and 1 year (20%) is allocated to work at the company where you will have the opportunity to work in their lab and be involved in their joint development work. After completing the 5-year doctoral program, you will work full-time at Rottneros where you will have the opportunity to lead projects within their pre-development, continue working towards the university, and be involved in the development of their products both in Sweden and internationally.
Your profile
We are looking for someone who primarily holds a Master's degree in chemical engineering and chemistry, but other master's programs may also be relevant if the main area or experience is deemed equivalent and important for the specific doctoral project. You have a keen interest in pulp and paper production or fiber technology and want to deepen your knowledge in the field. You communicate fluently in Swedish and English, both verbally and in writing.
As a person, you are curious, committed, persistent, and have a strong self-drive. Writing and creating a narrative come naturally to you, and you have the ability to explain, express, and analyze the outcomes of the project or research in a pedagogical manner. Significant emphasis is placed on personal qualities that are important for functioning as an industrial PhD candidate and that you reflect our values; we engage, we respect everyone, and we are professionals.
Other
The position is a doctoral position with access according to agreement.
