Offer Description

To synthesise electrocatalytic materials based on metal nanoparticles encapsulated in 1D-nanocarbon structures and optimize them to obtain materials with high HER and OER activities and performance stability. Correlation of electrocatalytic performance, i.e., activity and stability, with the physicochemical properties of the composite. The PhD student will gain a broad knowledge in the fields of (1) CCVD, (2) electrocatalysis, and (3) nanomaterials characterisation techniques including advanced operando methodology.

The doctoral student will be employed at Wrocław University of Science and Technology (Wrocław, Poland) for one year and for other two years at Technical University of Darmstadt (Darmstadt, Germany), including three months in the company Heraeus (Hanau, Germany). In order to receive the double degree the student will probably have to spend an additional year at PWR.

The project Unite!Energy, is funded by the DN-Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) call of the European Commission and is offering 12 fellowships starting in 2025 academic year. Each scholarship includes periods at two of the participating universities, and a secondment to an institution or company, to study the technology in a practical environment. Supervision: the doctoral student will be supervised by Prof. Piotr Rutkowski (PWR) and Prof. Jan Philipp Hofmann (TUDa).

Additional Information

Benefits

1st year: ca. 1824 € gross per month and additionally: 13th salary and employee capital plan, mobility allowance: 600 €/monthly, family allowance: 495 €/monthly.

2nd and 3rd year: 55 k€ and 57 k€ per annum plus mobility and family allowances as applicable and in line with the EC rules for Marie Sklodowska Curie Doctoral Networks 2022.

Social Security to be paid by university. The living allowance is a gross amount, including compulsory deductions under national law, such as employer and employee social security contributions and direct taxes.

Possibility of a 4th year at PWR.

During TU Darmstadt employment: free regional public transport in state of Hesse.

Eligibility criteria
  • Mobility rule. At the time of recruitment, the candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Short stays, such as holidays, are not considered.
  • No PhD awarded. Applicants are not eligible if they have already been awarded with a PhD title.
  • Selected candidate must be willing to travel and spend a prolonged time in another institute/country of the network during the PhD.
  • Researchers must be enrolled in a doctoral programme leading to the award of a doctoral degree in at least two EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country (Joint Doctorates).
  • For further details on eligibility criteria please check in the information of each available position. All interested applicants meeting the eligibility requirements, irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
  • Fulfil the academic and language requirement. In most of the cases, additional requirements must be satisfied, particularly in terms of selection procedures based on local regulations and/or internationally recognized English language qualifications achieved. Regarding the former, some institutions will request for degree and/or VISA recognition, before the interview date.
