Offer Description

To develop a physics-informed artificial intelligence for designing newly graded hydrogen-resistant metals manufactured by conventional and additive manufacturing processes and assess its feasibility for the hydrogen storage application. The PhD will gain knowledge in: (1) hydrogen–microstructure interactions, (2) modelling of hydrogen-metal interaction, (3) multiscale characterisation.

The doctoral student will be employed at Aalto University (Espoo, Finland), where will spend 3 years and 3 months, and will spend 9 months at Polytechnic University of Catalunya (Barcelona, Spain), including three months in the company Electro Optical Systems (Turku, Finland). After accomplished education the doctoral student will acquire a double PhD degree from Aalto and from UPC.

The project Unite!Energy, is funded by the DN-Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) call of the European Commission and is offering 12 fellowships starting in 2025 academic year. Each scholarship includes periods at two of the participating universities, and a secondment to an institution or company, to study the technology in a practical environment. Specific Requirements

- Graduated with the master’s thesis with the minimum grade of 3/5, if a numeric grade has been given AND the applicant completed the master’s degree courses (excluding the master’s thesis), with an average (weighted average) grade of at least 3.0/5. If you finish your master’s degree in the Autumn of 2024, you are also welcome to apply (you have to complete the master before the date of the recruitment).

Additional Information

Benefits

Starting salary of € 44,400 (€3,700x12, including Mobility Allowance) per annum. Additional Family allowance will be added to the salary, if applicable. The salary will increase during the project according to the local agreement of universities in Finland. The guaranteed PhD funding is for 36 months (i.e., funding from the European Commission); additional one year funding from the School of Engineering of Aalto University, according to the normal Aalto doctoral researcher salary levels, is foreseen.

The employment contract at Aalto University includes occupational health care, and Finland has a comprehensive social security system.

The applicant will have possibility to cooperate with world-class researchers, as well as to attend scientific conferences and meetings. Moreover, the research group provides strong scientific support and academic freedom, with possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration, both internationally and within Aalto University.

Eligibility criteria
  • Mobility rule. At the time of recruitment, the candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the recruitment date. Short stays, such as holidays, are not considered.
  • No PhD awarded. Applicants are not eligible if they have already been awarded with a PhD title.
  • Selected candidate must be willing to travel and spend a prolonged time in another institute/country of the network during the PhD.
  • Researchers must be enrolled in a doctoral programme leading to the award of a doctoral degree in at least two EU Member State or Horizon Europe Associated Country (Joint Doctorates).
  • For further details on eligibility criteria please check in the information of each available position. All interested applicants meeting the eligibility requirements, irrespective of age, gender, race, disability, religion or ethnic background are encouraged to apply.
  • Fulfil the academic and language requirement. In most of the cases, additional requirements must be satisfied, particularly in terms of selection procedures based on local regulations and/or internationally recognized English language qualifications achieved. Regarding the former, some institutions will request for degree and/or VISA recognition, before the interview date.
