Offer Description

The goal is to understand how PEMEC anode catalysts can be studied at high current densities in half-cell and single cell testing. This includes research on the testing methodology as well as the catalyst layer preparation routes, ink parameters, additives, and resulting layer structure. The aim is the optimal utilization of low noble metal catalysts in PEMECs. The PhD student will acquire cutting edge skills in: (1) preparation of catalyst layers, (2) half-cell testing of catalyst layers at high current densities, (3) sequences of the preparation processes to obtain required structures, (4) data-driven optimisation of PEMEC catalysts and catalyst layers, and (5) full MEA testing.

The doctoral student will be employed at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (Fürth, Germany) for 18 months and for other 18 months at Graz University of Technology (Graz, Austria), including three months in the company Heraeus (Hanau, Germany). After accomplished education the doctoral student will acquire a double PhD degree from FAU and from TU GRAZ.

The project Unite!Energy, is funded by the DN-Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) call of the European Commission and is offering 12 fellowships starting in 2025 academic year. Each scholarship includes periods at two of the participating universities, and a secondment to an institution or company, to study the technology in a practical environment. For specific information about each position please write to: unite.energy@upc.edu.

Supervision: the doctoral student will be supervised by Prof. Bastian Etzold (FAU) and Prof. Viktor Hacker (TU GRAZ).
