Offer Description

At the University of Greifswald’s Institute of Microbiology in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences there is a job vacancy expected to be available for next possible appointment, subject to budgetary regulations and the allocation of funds, for a part-time (75 %)

Research Assistant.

The contract is limited to 31 March 2027. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft.

The successful candidate will belong to the Institute of Microbiology at the Center of Functional Genomics of Microbes (C_FunGene), working in a very stimulating environment of interdisciplinary research. The C_FunGene is a modern research building featuring an excellent infrastructure and is located at the heart of the natural science campus in close proximity to the university hospital, the Helmholtz Institute for One Health (HIOH), the central library and the main mensa. Greifswald is a university and hanseatic town characterised by its student atmosphere, short distances and a direct vicinity to the Baltic Sea, offering plenty of recreation opportunities.

The holder of the position will work in the project “UtiliPhage”, which is being funded by the HIOH and University of Greifswald.

Tasks:

  • Establishment of protocols for an isolation of lytic bacteriophages from water, soil, feces and other environmental samples
  • Identification of phages that specifically lyse critical antibiotic-resistant bacterial isolates
  • Purification and amplification of phages
  • Determination of immunogenicity, toxicity and lytic efficiency of selected phages to assess their prospective application in antimicrobial therapies
  • Independent evaluation of data and preparation for their publication, which can be conducive to the completion of a doctoral degree
  • Teaching obligation of 2 classes (à 45 min./week pursuant to LVVO M-V) in the area of general microbiology, microbial physiology and molecular biology in practical courses, exercises and seminars

Employment requirements:

  • Completed advanced university degree in biology, biochemistry, human biology or comparable study programmes
  • Distinct interest in and enthusiasm for experimental and interdisciplinary work in the field of infection research
  • Excellent English language skills
  • Strong ability to work in a team
  • Experience in the field of microbiology and molecular biology
  • Knowledge of computer-based inquiry and data analyses
