Offer Description
1. By decision of the Dean of the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon, Professor Hermenegildo Fernandes, a tender is open for the award of two Scholarships for PhD students (Bolsa de Investigação).
These grants are funded by Portuguese national funds through Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, under project UIDB/00509/2020, of the Centre for Comparative Studies (CEComp) from the School of Arts and Humanities of the University of Lisbon.
2. The scholarship will be awarded for three months and may be renewed up to a maximum of 48 months and during the eligibility of the project.
3. The scholarship will be supervised during the first year by the Director of the Course together with the Tutor Professor assigned to the student. From the second year on, the PhD student will work under the supervision of his/her supervisor(s), defined at the end of the second curricular semester.
4. The PhD in Comparative Studies is a cycle of studies designed as a four-year programme. The first two years will be dedicated to advanced training: the first year consists of attending five seminars, and developing preliminary and supervised research within one of the research groups of the Centre for Comparative Studies; the second year consists of attending a methodological seminar on advanced research (S3), and fulfilling an individual supervised plan (S4). At the end of this fourth semester, students present and discuss their thesis projects before a jury composed of the supervisor(s), an external evaluator, and the director of the PhD course. The remaining two years will be dedicated to the preparation of the thesis and the integration of the PhD student in the scientific environment and may include a short period of research abroad. The thesis will be completed at the end of the eighth semester of the study cycle.
5. Application submission

- curriculum vitae;
- degree certificate (if you do not have this document, you must send a statement of compliance - see template at FLUL website);
- document proving enrolment in the required program (if applicant is already enrolled);
- scientific article previously prepared in an academic context (maximum 15 pages);
- preliminary research project (maximum 5 pages);
- letters of recommendation (two).
The application and all documents associated with it must be written in either Portuguese or English.
No required application document may be submitted after the deadline.
For application purposes, diplomas, certificates, and transcripts need not be submitted. In lieu, a statement of compliance is required. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to the signing of the contract.
Fellowships applicants must show that they meet the necessary conditions to enrol in the program leading to the attainment of the requested academic degree. Proof of acceptance will be required prior to the signing of the contract.

Upon completion of the grant period, the scholarship holder has up to 60 weekdays to submit to npac@letras.ulisboa.pt (a) final report on the activities and results (in electronic format); and (b) the supervisor(s)'s evaluation of the final report.
The final report will be evaluated by the supervisor(s) according to the following criteria:
- Quality of the work developed - 60%
- Achieved results achieved (publications, conference presentations) - 30%
- Integration and adaptation skills - 10%
Each criterion will be graded 0-20. The final evaluation will be 0-20.
Applicants must be enrolled (or meet the conditions for enrolment) in the Doctoral Programme in Comparative Studies of the School of Art and Humanities the University of Lisbon.
Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree (BA) and Master’s Degree (MA) in the Humanities or related areas.
Applicants must have a good oral and written command of Portuguese and English.
Applicants must permanently and habitually reside in Portugal at the start date of the fellowship.
Additional Information
Stipend in accordance to the Portuguese Science Foundation salary scale, €1259,64 per month (see https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atualizacao-2024.pdf), paid by bank transfer.
Insurance costs (Seguro de Acidentes Pessoais and Seguro Social Voluntário) are supported by the employer.
Registration and tuition fees are included in the amount paid by the fellowship holder, up to the maximum pre-established limit.
Acceptance of the fellowship is exclusive of any other professional or research activity (Art. 5 of the Research Fellowship Holder Statute).
The following applicants are eligible:
a) Portuguese citizens or citizens of other Member States of the European Union;
b) Citizens of other countries;
c) Stateless persons;
d) Political refugees.
The selection criteria, expressed on a scale from 0 to 20 points, are the following:
1. Curriculum Assessment (CA):
1.1. Final classification of the Bachelor's degree (10%);
1.2. Final classification of the Master's degree (20%);
1.3. Research experience and skills (20%);
1.4. Motivation letter (10%);
1.5. Scientific article (10%);
1.6. Research project (30%).
2. Interview (E)
Final evaluation = AC (70%) + E (30%)
For the interview, only candidates who have obtained a score of 14 points or more will be considered, all others being excluded from the competition.
Applicants who, at the end of the entire selection process, have been evaluated with less than 14 points will not be considered eligible for the grant.
Applicants with diplomas issued by foreign higher education institutions may apply and will be evaluated using the same criteria as applicants with diplomas issued by Portuguese institutions, as long as they make proof, in their application, of the academic degree recognition and the conversion of the final classification for the Portuguese scale under the terms of the applicable legislation.
Applicants with recognized foreign diplomas who do not make proof of conversion of the final classification to the Portuguese scale or applicants who do not present a diploma (replaced by a statement of compliance) will be evaluated with a minimum classification of 10 points in the criterions “1.1. Final classification of the Bachelor's degree” and “1.2. Final classification of the Master's degree”.

Selected applicant(s) will be notified by email.
Applicants may submit queries or complaints about the decisions within a ten working days period at the prior hearing of interested parties by email to the address for sending applications (see section “Offer Description”).
Final decisions must be announced within 90 weekdays of the application deadline and up to 60 weekdays after the end of the query and complaint deadline.
A complaint may be lodged against the final decision within 15 working days, or, alternatively, an appeal may be lodged with the Dean of FLUL within 30 working days, both after the respective notification.
In case of non-acceptance by the selected applicant(s), the grant may be offered to any of the other ranked applicants within 18 months of the final announcement.
