Offer Description

We are one of the youngest universities in Germany and think in terms of opportunities rather than limitations. In the heart of the Ruhr metropolis, we develop ideas with a future at 12 faculties. We are strong in both research and teaching and consider diversity an integral part of our culture as we promote potential and are committed to upholding genuine equity in education.

The following position is to be filled starting September 1, 2024 within the Faculty of Chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen:

Junior Professor (W1 with tenure track to W2) in Physical Chemistry

W1 salary band as defined in the North Rhine-Westphalian salary regulations for the W salary range (Landesbesoldungsordnung; LBesO W)

We are looking for a junior scientist with research experience in a topical field of experimental or theoretical physical chemistry or related disciplines who will complement the existing research profile in chemistry at the University of Duisburg-Essen in a fruitful way. We are open to all research areas that meet this criterion. Potential associated areas include in-situ spectroscopy (such as the investigation of catalytic centres or liquid/solid interfaces, (bio)molecular imaging, chiro-optical methods, nanophotonics, plasmonics, method development) and colloids/materials (including smart colloidal systems, hybrid materials for applications in catalysis or medicine, self-organising systems, nanofabrication).

Candidates are to propose an innovative research programme aimed at acquiring competitive third- party funded projects, preferably DFG-funded projects. The research programme is expected to provide a clear perspective for collaboration with existing research groups in the Faculty of Chemistry and enhance the research programme of ACTIVE SITES (www.uni-due.de/activesites). A willingness to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration across UDE’s strategic research areas – the Center for Nanointegration Duisburg-Essen (CENIDE), the Center of Medical Biotechnology (ZMB), the Centre for Water and Environmental Research (ZWU) – is also expected. In addition to professional qualifications, candidates are expected to possess transferable skills such as leadership and communication as well as an international mindset.

The University of Duisburg-Essen places particular emphasis on the quality of teaching. The successful candidate is to teach across the whole field of physical chemistry as a major and minor subject as well as to teachers-in-training in German. We are happy to offer support in improving German language skills if required. Candidates must outline their didactic approach in a teaching concept, taking into account the profile of the University of Duisburg-Essen. Publications in peer- reviewed journals and the willingness to actively engage in the University’s self-administration are required.

Criteria for appointment are based on Section 36 of the NRW Higher Education Act (Hochschulgesetz; HG).

The University of Duisburg-Essen strives to promote the diversity of its members (see https://www.uni-due.de/diversity/en/). The University also aims to increase the ratio of women among its academic staff and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply. If two candidates are equally qualified, women will be given preference as stipulated in the Equal Opportunities Act for North Rhine-Westphalia (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz; LGG NRW). Applications from qualified candidates with disabilities or equivalent status as defined in Section 2 (3) of Book IX of the German Social Code (Sozialgesetzbuch; SGB IX) are encouraged.

Applications should include the usual documents (CV including information on academic and professional experience, a list of peer-reviewed publications, copies of relevant certificates, a description of the research profile and the potential for collaboration at the University of Duisburg- Essen, a teaching and learning concept, information about teaching activities, involvement in academic self-governance and external funds obtained to date). Please submit your application to the address below by April 29, 2024.

Dekan der Fakultät für Chemie der Universität Duisburg-Essen, Herrn Univ.-Prof. Dr. Torsten C. Schmidt, Universitätsstraße 2, 45141 Essen, dekanat@chemie.uni-due.de.
