Offer Description
BOKU Vienna offers a PhD position in the framework of the MSCA Doctoral Network MobiliTraIN(Ion Mobility Mass Spectrometry Training Network). The project aims to bring a new fundamental understanding of ion mobility-high resolution mass spectrometry (IM-HRMS), provide reference materials and guidelines for standardisation, develop state-of-the-art methods for the application of IM-HRMS in biopharmaceutical development, biological omics studies and non-target screening of contaminants, and lay the foundations for the adoption of IM-HRMS in industry by training 13 doctoral candidates.
This PhD project (Establishing Measurement Standards for Small Molecule Bioanalytical Methods Based on Ion Mobility-Mass Spectrometry) offered aims to 1) Establish new dedicated measurement standards based on materials of biotechnological origin for broad application in small molecule analysis using commercial and non-commercial IM-HRMS technology; 2) Develop robust procedures for preparation of materials based on new reference samples derived from a recognised industrially relevant yeast (Pichia pastoris); 3) Optimise production of each material to ensure broadest analytical coverage in terms of m/z, CCS, and ensuring applicability within relevant analytical conditions, i.e. polarity, mode of chromatography; 4) Establish the new materials within analytical workflows encompassing a range of small molecule applications across all major commercial IM-HRMS instruments within MobiliTraIN.
Secondments: This project is carried out in strong collaboration with the following groups, and visits to their laboratories are expected during the project. A willingness to travel and spend time abroad is therefore essential.
- Host: BAM, Germany; Length: 3 months; Purpose: Training on standardisation and certification of reference materials.
- Host: Agilent, USA; Length: 1 month; Purpose: Testing of new extracts and reporting data with Agilent reference instrumentation in R&D environment. 3)
- Host: FUB, Germany; Length: 3 months; Purpose: Implementation and testing of materials on in-house modified IM-MS instrumentation. Training in computational prediction methods for small molecules.
