Offer Description

Mission:

Carry out the research tasks of a project with the aim of analyzing the presence of how nitrogen affects heat transfer mechanisms and phenomenology during accidental situations.

Functions to be developed:

  • Collect and analyze existing experimental data, together with detailed computational simulations to accurately study the behavior of nitrogen in different scenarios.
  • Apply the phenomenological validation methodology developed by ANT (which validates thermo-hydraulic codes).
  • Quantitatively validate the ability of the codes described in the previous point, to reproduce complex experiments.
  • Transfer the lessons learned and the results analyzed to the effects that nitrogen could have in equivalent accidental situations in commercial nuclear power plants.

Additional comments

Explanation of the project:

As part of Spanish participation in international experimental programs such as PKL, ROSA or ATLAS, numerous post-experiment analyzes have been carried out for various scenarios involving the prolonged injection of nitrogen. In general, these analyzes have not emphasized or focused on specific nitrogen-related issues. In this sense, it is very convenient and necessary to carry out a more complete analysis focused on the impact of nitrogen during specific accidental sequences. The goal is to thoroughly understand how the presence of nitrogen affects heat transfer mechanisms and phenomenology during accidental situations.

The project will start with the collection and analysis of existing experimental data, together with detailed computational simulations to accurately study the behavior of nitrogen in different scenarios. Subsequently, the phenomenological validation methodology developed by ANT will be applied. This methodology is specific to validating thermohydraulic codes through experiments in integral installations. By propagating the uncertainty and classifying the experiments by phenomena, the ability of the codes to reproduce complex experiments can be quantitatively validated. Finally, the final goal of the project will be to transfer the lessons learned and the results analyzed to the effects that nitrogen could have in equivalent accidental situations in commercial nuclear power plants. This last stage will be carried out using advanced climbing techniques, of which the ANT group has extensive experience and its own methodology.

The results obtained from this project will be very relevant to improve safety and accident management in PWR nuclear reactors. It is hoped that the findings and recommendations derived from the analysis will contribute to the design and operation of safety injection systems, as well as the implementation of additional measures to minimize the negative effects of nitrogen injection in accident situations.
