This is a 2 years full-time postdoctoral academic research role: you will conduct a specified programme of research supported by research training, under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator (Dr. Silvia De Zordo - University of Barcelona, Department of Anthropology).

You will be part of a research team based at the University of Barcelona, the Host Institution of this ERC research project. The first part of this study aims to understand the characteristics of European women travelling to the UK, Netherlands and Spain to access abortion services as well as to examine the legal/social barriers faced by these women in their search for abortion care.

The primary purpose of your role is to carry out mixed-methods research on cross-country abortion travel at abortion clinics located in London and Liverpool, by recruiting, administering surveys and conducting in-depth interviews with women traveling from other European countries to England to seek abortion care, to analyse the qualitative data collected, and to contribute to dissemination of the research results.

You must be available and commit to the full length of the described research period. Your principal duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Conduct data collection on cross-country abortion travel at abortion clinics located in London and in Liverpool during a 1 year period (months 0-12 of your contract). You will be provided with a protocol, a survey and an in-depth interview instrument prepared by the PI and her Co-Is (Dr. Joanna Mishtal-UCF; Dr. Caitlin Gerdts-Ibis Reproductive Health), and approved by Ethics Committees. Prior to starting data collection you will be trained by the PI and her Co-Is, who will introduce you to the clinics’ staff. We aim at collecting up to 50 interviews in England.
  • Safely store the research documentation and share it with the PI.
  • Code the in-depth interviews conducted in the languages in which you are highly proficient (see requested languages below) using Atlas (software for qualitative data analysis).
  • Analyze the qualitative data collected in England under the supervision of the PI.
  • Attend relevant public events (conferences, meetings, and demonstrations) on abortion rights in the London and Liverpool area and collect news/data on barriers to legal abortion and cross-country abortion travel in Europe (specifically to the UK).
  • Contribute to the update of the project’s multi-lingual website.
  • Disseminate the results of the research conducted in England via scientific papers to be submitted/presented at/to international, academic conferences and journals.
  • Help the PI prepare data collection for the following phase of the study in two of the main origin countries of cross-country abortion travel - Italy and France - during the second year of your contract.

Salary (gross): € 3.228.39 p/month.

The research project: this is a 5 years long ERC Starting Grant project titled “Women travelling to seek abortion care in Europe: the impact of barriers to legal abortion on women living in countries with ostensibly liberal abortion laws” (Acronym: BAR2LEGAB; number: 680004). You can find a summary of the research project at: http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/203367_en.html

The project will cover the travel expenses related to data collection and to your participation in two Conferences, up to a maximum established in the budget approved by the ERC in August 2016.
