The Intelligent Multimodal Vision Analysis group (IMVA) is looking for a Research Developer in the context of the European project EMERALD (https://www.upf.edu/web/emerald) with title Artificial Intelligence and Process Automation for Sustainable Entertainment and Media, namely, the EMERALD project with Grant agreement ID: 101119800, HORIZON-CLh4-2022-DIGITAL-EMERGING-02 (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101119800).
The IMVA group within EMERALD investigates computer vision techniques to improve video matting, sport video analysis and real-time pose estimation of (body- and head-pose) presenter.
This job is expected to contribute to the development of an end-to-end Deep-Learning-based tools for high-quality automatic video matting (more details below).
The candidate will work in close relation with researchers at the University and researchers at leading companies that produce real-time 3D graphics and virtual set solutions for broadcasters and film producers.
Tasks to be performed:
- To develop an end-to-end Deep Learning approach for the video matting and related media applications, with reduced amounts and efficient use of training data.
- Develop, execute, and validate deep learning models for real-time trimap-free video matting.
- Prepare reports and documentation of the developed technology / techniques.
- Close interaction with end users at broadcasting sites to test and validate the developed technology.
These tasks are part of the European EMERALD project. The tasks are linked to Work Package 2 (WP2 AI-supported automation of tools and methods for sustainable digital content creation), second task (WP2T2 Tools for video matting).
The duration of these tasks is estimated over a period of 12 months.
Dedication and working hours: Full time (35h/week).
Planned remuneration approx: From 31.982,86 to 39.376 gross per year based on experience and skills.
Main research field: computer vision.
Financing fund: PREUR02823 - HEu-CL4-101119800-EMERALD-C.Ballester, projecte “AI and Process Automation for Sustainable Entertainment and Media”, Horizon Europe (2021-2027).
This position is funded by the EUROPEAN UNION, Program Horizon Europe (2021-2027).

- Bachelor Degree or equivalent
- Engineering, Math or informatics degree (or equivalent).
- Experience in (one or multiple areas) computer vision, video processing, machine learning, deep learning, pattern recognition.
- Excellent programming skills and knowledge of relevant programming languages and development platforms for deep learning (e.g. Python, PyTorch).
- Good communication skills in English, both written and oral.

The expected start date is February 20th 2024, the job is in Barcelona, and Nie and a work permit is required.
Additional Information
Selection criteria: The selection of the candidates will be made through evaluation of the curriculum and, where appropriate, with the carrying out a test and/or interview. Valuation will be as follows:
- Academic Background (20 points).
- Professional experience and adequacy to the proposed profile (60 points): Proven experience in developing/training deep learning architectures for Computer Vision problems.
- Other merits (20 points). Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong communications and interpersonal skills. Experience in research-oriented projects. Ability to read, understand and be able to use code from research papers of the field.
The minimum score to pass the selection process is 70 points. The candidate with the highest score in the selection process will be awarded the job.
