Offer Description
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a fully funded (€22,000 annual stipend + fees) 4-year PhD in organic chemistry within the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences at the National University of Ireland, Galway. We are looking for inquisitive students who wish to explore new approaches to synthetic organic chemistry for the development of novel technologies for application in organic methodology under the supervision of Dr. Laura Cunningham.

Job Description:
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Dr Laura Cunningham to complete a PhD research program on one of the projects described in the attached PDF. This is a predominantly lab-based research role. The student will receive committed support and mentorship from Dr. Cunningham throughout, and may have opportunities for industrial work placements and travel to scientific conferences.

Qualifications/Skills required:
The ideal candidate should expect to hold a BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related discipline with some experience in organic synthesis. Candidates should have excellent communication and organizational skills; enjoy organic synthesis; and have strong documentation, oral and interpersonal skills.
Essential Requirements:
- At least 2.1 or equivalent BSc or MSc in Chemistry, Materials Science or Chemical Engineering
- Evidence of practical experience in synthetic organic chemistry
- Excellent English speaking and writing abilities
- Eligible for enrolment in the Structured PhD in Chemistry programme at NUI Galway
Desirable Requirements:
- Knowledge of asymmetric catalysis
- Knowledge of supramolecular chemistry
- Evidence of proactivity
- Strong communication skills and willingness to foster a friendly, supportive environment

Additional Information
PhD stipend €22,000 per annum for four years + Academic Fees (including non-EU)
