Job description and tasks Within the project ‘Gender and Social-Origin Determinants of Early Labour Market Performance in Hard Times’, funded by the Spanish Research Agency (AEI), the specific research associated with this research assistantship will involve the use the Integrated Value Survey (IVS). IVS integrates different European Value Surveys and World Value Surveys into a single dataset. The research will explore the over-time and cross-national variation in overeducation among highly- and middle-educated men and women. It is explicitly aimed at exploring the possible association between gender, overeducation and gender egalitarianism at individual and country level.

The Research Assistant will assist the principal researcher in the cleaning and preparation of the dataset, the establishment of correct measures of overeducation for different countries and waves and the definition of the correct method to analyse the data, considering their hierarchical nature

The specific tasks to be carried out within the job are the following:

  • Assistance in cleaning and preparing IVS data for the analysis.
  • Assistance in the correction of any possible bias (self-selection or non-response bias)
  • Treatment of missing values
  • Collection of country-level data and merge of these data and individual-level data drawn from IVS
  • Assistance in the construction of statistical models for the assessment of over-time (trends) in gender differences in overeducation and their association with gender values.

The research project (‘Gender and Social-Origin Determinants of Early Labour Market Performance in Hard Times’, PID2020-119800RB-I00) is currently funded by the Spanish Research Agency (Agencia Española de Investigación).

The project is aimed at exploring the role of gender and social origin as potential drivers of inequality in terms of educational mismatch (overeducation) training and promotion, and the degree to which any inequality derived from them is deepened in times of economic slowdown.

Required qualifications for candidate

  1. Degree in Economics, Sociology or Demography and MA or PhD would be an asset. A degree in Statistics may also be considered. Research experience with quantitative research methods
  2. Research experience in gender labour market inequality, transition from education to work, overeducation or over skilling or gender differences in occupational attainment will be highly valued.
  3. Experience in panel data and longitudinal data analysis. In particular, experience with IVS (Integrated Value Surveys) or with any one of the two types of surveys (European Value Surveys / World Value Surveys) IVS is constituted by.
  4. Experience with Stata

Type of contract: Indefinite, in accordance with the terms of RD 32/2021 de 28 de Diciembre de 2021.

The candidate will work part-time (10 hours per week) for a duration of 3 months starting in January 2024, under a Research Support Personnel (PSR group 2 level n) with an annual gross salary (12 months) of 9998.88€ aprox per year (including Social Security benefits). The gross compensation for three months is 2583.54€aprox. The position may be extended depending on project needs.

The contract includes all the benefits of the Spanish public health and social security system, as well as additional financial support for the participation in project-relevant conferences and scientific meetings.

As an additional benefit, the principal researcher will consider the co-authorship of any publication derived from the research in which the candidate will provide her/his assistance.

  • Disciplinary fit with project: 1-5 points.

The disciplinary fit includes both the level and specialisation of previous academic qualification (see point 1 above, ‘Required qualifications’) and the fit between any eventual research previously carried out by the candidate and the research project she/he would eventually incorporate to.

  • Relevant methodological skills: 1-5 points
