Offer Description
Two PhD positions are open in University College Dublin as a partner in the EU-funded MSCA Doctoral Network 'ACTVA', Advanced Customized Technologies for Intact Vision in Ageing (www.kth.se/activa). ACTIVA provides international training at the interface of physics, optics and medicine to develop novel techniques facilitating intact vision with age. A background (MSc) in optics, physics, optical engineering, vision science, electrical engineering, photonics or a related discipline relevant for the project is essential.
The two vacancies are focused on the following work packages (one vacancy in relation to each topic):
WP 1.1 Circumventing presbyopia and simulating vision in the ageing eye
WP 3.3 Assessment and novel vision aids for age-related macular degeneration and retinal degeneration
We seek highly motivated individuals who are interested in exploring those topics, while interacting closely with partner institutions and companies related to the "Activa" network.
As part of the doctoral PhD programme in University College Dublin, successful applicants will be registered to a doctoral programme and will have to complete up to 30 credits of additional training that may include complementary skills such as tutoring and demonstrating, academic writing, higher level physics courses, computational and programming courses.

Additional Information
The EU provides 36 months of support with a highly competitive salary. The exact amount depends on the researchers family status and relocation needs. The candidate will have the opportunity to interact with other researchers in the Activa Network as well as participate in both national and international conferences.
All researchers recruited in a DN must be doctoral candidates (i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment) and undertake transnational mobility (see the mobility rule definition below). Researchers who have successfully defended their doctoral thesis but who have not yet formally been awarded the doctoral degree will not be considered eligible.
For all recruitments, the eligibility of the researcher will be determined at the date of their first recruitment in the action. This status will not evolve over the lifetime of the action, even if they are re-recruited at another beneficiary.
Mobility Rule: Researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of the recruiting beneficiary for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their date of recruitment. Compulsory national service, short stays such as holidays, and time spent as part of a procedure for obtaining refugee status under the Geneva Convention are not taken into account. For international European research organisations, international organisations, or entities created under Union law, recruited researchers must not have spent more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before their date of recruitment in the same appointing organisation.
Interested candidates can contact Dr. Brian Vohnsen (supervisor of the two PhD projects) for further information. When applying the following should be adhered to:
1) Provide an expression of interest (Max 1 page) in relation to the preferred research topic
2) Provide a CV (Max 4 pages)
3) Provide a short statement (Max 200 words) in support of commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion as well as Scientific Integrity.
