Design and deployment of edge-cloud continuum solutions for IoT data acquisition, processing and visualization in structural health monitoring applications

The project aims to design, develop and test distributed software platforms for IoT data management in structural health monitoring of civil infrastructures, specifically bridges. The activities focus on two research issues. First, the project proposes the use of distributed network architectures consisting of edge nodes located near the bridge and remote cloud infrastructures. Hence, the goal is to design and develop proper IoT edge caching and processing techniques to optimize latency and reduce the volume of SHM data transferred to the cloud. Second, the project addresses the acquisition of data from heterogeneous sources, including multiple sensor networks installed on the same structure. The developed platform needs to handle the device heterogeneity to acquire IoT data from various sensors in a scalable manner. The platform will be tested in both small-scale lab environments and real-world civil structures.
